This is one of the temples you definitely can’t miss in Luxor ⬇️

Known to the Egyptians as Ipet Resyt or the Southern Sanctuary, instead of being dedicated to a single god or deified ruler, Luxor Temple stood for millennia as the symbol of the pharaoh’s power with most official festivals and celebrations like the Opet Festival or Sed Festival being held there 🌞👑

This is one of the finest and rarest surviving examples of original ancient Greek bronze sculpture - and why it’s so special ⬇️

1️⃣ Most ancient bronze statues were melted down for weapons or coins during the Middle Ages. The Boxer at rest survived because it was intentionally buried in antiquity to protect it from barbarian invasions, placed carefully on a stone seat and packed with fine dirt to prevent damage 🪏

2️⃣ Unlike classical Greek statues that show idealised, flawless heroes, this sculpture embraces raw realism - the boxer has a broken nose, “cauliflower” ears from repeated blows, a split lip, and a swollen right eye, and visible exhaustion. The sculptor even used copper to create red drops of blood that look like they are dripping from his face🩸

3️⃣ The statue also provides historians with a perfect look at ancient athletic gear. His hands are wrapped in caestus - heavy leather thongs lined with fur and reinforced with thick leather rings. These gloves were designed to inflict severe, bone-crushing damage 🥊

4️⃣ The boxer’s toes and fingers are slightly worn down. This suggests that in antiquity, people regularly touched or kissed the statue for good luck, treating the boxer as a heroic figure with protective or healing powers 🤲🏻

5️⃣ It is still debated today whether he is if looking at the referee, his next opponent, or the crowd, and whether his expression shows only exhaustion after a triumph - or a heavy loss 👁️

Who do you think he is looking at? Share it in the comments ⬇️💭
