One Satisfied Customer • Ezo Fox, Hokkaido, Japan.

•

The Ezo fox is widely distributed in Hokkaido and is slightly larger than the red fox found in the rest of Japan. Ezo is a Japanese word meaning "foreigner" and refers to the historical lands of the Ainu people north of Honshu. This fluffy beauty was hoping for treats from tourists and looking for his next mark since he was getting no satisfaction from me. I, however, was very satisfied.

Happy Family Day (to most of my Canadian compatriots)! • Snow Monkeys, Nagano, Japan.

•

As their name suggests, the Snow Monkey (Japanese Macaque) tends to hang out in the snowy areas of Japan. In fact, they’re totally unfazed by the cold and are the most northern-living primate on earth... other than humans. Their faces may appear to be red from the bitter cold, but a rosy complexion is just a sign of monkey maturity. That said... my shutter finger was bright red from the freezing temperatures!

Quiet Reflection • Buddhist Monk, Wat Chuev Srei Vibol, Siem Reap, Cambodia.

•

From 1975 to 1979, the Khmer Rouge regime dealt a devastating blow to Cambodian Buddhism. Religion was prohibited, and temples were damaged or destroyed. Tragically, it is estimated that up to 50,000 monks lost their lives during this period. However, today Buddhism continues to influence Cambodian daily life, and many Cambodians choose the monastic path in their desire to follow in their parents’ footsteps and deepen their understanding of Buddhism.

A Perfect Morning • Lenticular Clouds Over Mount Fuji, Lake Kawaguchi, Japan.

•

Mount Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan and is an active stratovolcano which last erupted in 1708. It has been the country’s sacred symbol since ancient times and was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2013... and it’s just plain pretty.

Hallowed Ground • Strandarkirkja, Iceland.
•

The story/saga/legend says that once upon a time, sailors in danger vowed to build a church on the spot where they landed, if they were to live through the storm. They saw a light on the shore, headed towards it and found a bright being standing on the water's edge. They landed safely and the church was built as promised. Many people in trouble or danger still vow that if they get through it safely, they'll give money to Strandakirkja, making it one of the richest churches in Iceland.

Mutual Respect • Thar Desert, Rajasthan, India

•

2024 has been designated as the International Year of Camelids by the United Nations General Assembly catapulting this species into the limelight. Fingers crossed awareness and respect will follow. Rajasthan is home to 86% of India’s camels, but for all their resilience in the austere environs of the Thar desert, their numbers have plummeted in recent years. Nomadic herders (Raikas) struggle to arrange for fodder and veterinary care, and indigenous grasses, once a prolific food source, have all but disappeared.

Wild and Windy! • Foss á Síðu, South Coast of Iceland

•
The farm at Foss á Síðu has been inhabited since between 874 and 930 AD. and is mentioned in one of the earliest pieces of Icelandic literature, the Book of Settlement, a vital tool for historians in understanding Iceland’s stories and the lineage of its people. This site also claims ownership of one of the country's most mysterious legends going back to the 16th Century. It is said that because of the wicked ways of one man, a family was cursed for nine generations. Guess I should have posted this spooky spot on Halloween, but it doesn’t seem so cursed to me.

Swept Away • Glacial Ice Chunk, Diamond Beach, Iceland.

•

Pieces of ice on the Diamond Beach come from the nearby Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where chunks of ice break off from the glacier and float out to sea. These “diamonds” eventually wash up on the shore, where they are sculpted by the waves and tides.

Lava Layers • Reynisfjara Beach Basalt Formations, Iceland.

•

With enormous basalt stacks, wild Atlantic waves, and spectacular panoramas, Reynisfjara is widely considered to be the most beautiful example of Iceland’s black sand beaches. National Geographic voted this spot one of the Top 10 non-tropical beaches on the planet. Get there early! It gets VERY crowded.

If Trees Could Talk • Yours Truly at Cathedral Grove, Port Alberni, British Columbia. • In June a wildfire near the 800-year-old trees in Cathedral Grove was thankfully brought under control, but as fires continue to run rampant across British Columbia and the Northwest Territories, they threaten access routes and isolate rural communities. New evacuation orders are being issued every day. Established charities and support groups say the best way to help is through monetary donations.Please check out United Way’s BC wildfire campaign to see how you can help.
