In 1567, Mary, Queen of Scots was taken to Loch Leven Castle, a lonely stone castle sitting on an island in the middle of Loch Leven.

Mary had been facing growing opposition from Scottish nobles after the murder of her husband, Lord Darnley. Eventually, she was forced to abdicate the Scottish throne in favour of her young son, James VI.

At Loch Leven Castle, Mary was held prisoner for almost a year. She was lonely and desperately wanted to escape.

Legend tells that Mary became close to Willie Douglas, a young man connected to the castle. With his help, she managed to escape in May 1568.

One evening, Willie secretly obtained the keys to the castle. Mary disguised herself and slipped away. They crossed the dark waters of Loch Leven by boat, leaving the castle behind them.

Mary then gathered supporters and tried to regain her throne. But her army was defeated at the Battle of Langside.

Her escape from Loch Leven was only the beginning of an extraordinary and tragic journey. Mary fled to England, hoping that her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I, would help her.

Instead, Mary spent the next 19 years imprisoned in England before being executed in 1587.

Today, Loch Leven Castle remains on its little island, and visitors can imagine Mary looking across the water, dreaming of freedom. #maryqueenofscots #scotland #history #lochleven by @juulia1552
