I say it often because I’m proud.

Proud to be that little Black girl from the hood of Sacramento who had big dreams… and simply refused to give up.

Y’ALL!!! I WONNNNN!!! 😭🎭🌹

I am an NAACP Theatre Award-winning Playwright!!!

AND... my producers won too!! Which means my solo show, @arosecalledcandace is now an NAACP Theatre Award-winning production. WOW. WOW. WOW. GOD!!! 🥹❤️

There is so much I want to say, but... I’m still trying to process it all. I truly did not prepare a speech because I genuinely had no expectation of winning. I was simply honored to be nominated alongside such incredible artists. So when they called my name... Y’ALL! All the nerves, disbelief, gratitude, joy, and shock hit me at once.

Looking back, there are a hundred more people I wish I had thanked... including my incredible co-director, @officialbernadettespeakes. Bernadette, if you’re seeing this, charge it to my head and not my heart. ♥️ Thank you for your brilliant collaboration, your vision, and the care you poured into this production. I’m so grateful to have shared this journey with you.

My deepest gratitude to the @naacptheatreawards @juveeproductions, @therobeytheatrecompany, my family, friends, and every single person who has believed in my story over the years.

This award belongs to all of us Roses. 🌹

God has carried me through one of the hardest seasons of my life, and this moment is a reminder that He is still faithful.

#Juneteenth isn’t just a celebration of freedom—it’s a powerful reminder of how long justice was denied, and how far we still have to go.

Our ancestors fought for liberation with nothing but hope and faith. We honor them not just by remembering, but by continuing the fight—for equity, for justice, for our future.

Today we honor Juneteenth, a day to celebrate freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality.

At this year’s commencement ceremony, Distinguished Alumnus Julius Tennon reminded UTulsa graduates that true progress comes through unity and the courage to be a force for change. His words echo today as we reflect, celebrate, and continue moving forward together.

Today was the @NAACP Theatre Awards Nominee Mixer, and what a joy it was to be in community with so many talented artists and storytellers. 🥹✨

I am STILL soaking it all in that my solo show, @arosecalledcandace is nominated for both Best Director and Best Playwright. What a blessing. What a journey. What a testimony.

There were so many moments along the way when I wasn’t sure how the story would continue, but God did. 🌹

Today, I’m simply choosing gratitude.

Thank You, God. Thank you to everyone who has supported “A Rose Called Candace” and believed in me along the way.

Can’t wait to celebrate with my fellow nominees at the awards ceremony! 🙏🏾✨

In 2021, I was honored to create an 8-part poetry series addressing topical themes for Season 3 of @goodtrouble.

One of the first poems I wrote was “GUILTY.”

Today, I find myself revisiting this piece because my heart is broken over the case of Karmelo Anthony.

My heart goes out to the family of Austin Metcalf, who lost their son. No family should ever have to endure that kind of grief.

At the same time, I am DEVASTATED by what I continue to witness when it comes to the treatment of Black and Brown children within our justice system. Watching this case unfold has brought up many of the same feelings that inspired me to write this poem years ago.

As a Black woman in America, I am EXHAUSTED by the disparities, the double standards, and the reality that so many young people who look like my nephews, my brother, and members of my community are too often viewed through a different lens.

This poem was written in 2021, but sadly its message still resonates today.

God, PLEASE continue to protect our children. Please continue to protect Black and Brown boys. And please help us build a world where justice is truly blind.

“You’re a masterpiece. Even on the days you feel like a rough draft. You’re a vital part of this world’s story and you are loved more deeply than you can possibly imagine.”

Distinguished Alumnus Julius Tennon (B.F.A. '78) earned his honorary doctorate from The University of Tulsa this weekend, in addition to serving as the keynote speaker for its 2026 commencement ceremonies. He left graduates with inspirational messages about showing up for one another, leadership, hard work and being a changemaker.

Tennon’s career spans film, television and theater. Tennon and his wife, Academy Award-winning actor Viola Davis, co-founded JuVee Productions, a company focused on developing and producing stories from historically underrepresented voices. He remains actively engaged with his alma mater, supporting mentorship and experiential learning initiatives that connect students with opportunities in the entertainment and media industries. by @juveeproductions
