Happy Fall Friday!! The amazing composer we are featuring this Friday is Camille Pépin.

“Camille Pépin is one of the most widely recognized composers of her generation. Her orchestral language, rooted in color, movement and a strong sensory dimension, has led to international exposure and numerous commissions.

With a primary focus on orchestral music, her works have been performed by leading ensembles including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, The Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Deutsche Symphonie Orchester, The Frankfurt Radio Symphony and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Pépin has received major awards including the Grand Prix Sacem for Symphonic Music, as well as several prizes from the Académie des Beaux-Arts. She was named Composer of the year at the Victoires de la musique Classique in 2020 and was appointed Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2022.”

So I’m trying something new, and I’d love for you to be a part of it.

I’ve had this idea kicking around for a while, and on Saturday, October 24, I’m finally bringing it to life with my wonderful colleague, pianist Julia Scott Carey!

Many Voices, One Song is part Juventas New Music Ensemble recital, part community sing-along, featuring contemporary works by living composers alongside songs from the social justice canon.

Julia and I will perform works by Ashi Day (@ashi4000 ), Rosephanye Powell (@rosephanye ), Anthony R. Green (@piargno84 ), and Oliver Caplan (@olivercaplan ), and then invite YOU to lift your voices with us in songs of hope, resilience, and protest, including We Shall Overcome, This Little Light of Mine, Blowin’ in the Wind, and more.

Music has always been a powerful tool for bringing people together, building community, and inspiring change. And there’s something particularly special about making music together rather than just listening to it. No singing experience necessary! You don’t need to read music, and we’ll provide the lyrics and guide you along the way. All voices are welcome!

📅 Saturday, October 24 | 7 PM
📍 Medford Public Library, Bonsignore Hall
111 High Street, Medford, MA

All We Are at the @multiculturalac is TONIGHT! Our first Mainstage program of the season asks us what it means to endure, to hold multiple identities, and to cherish what is most fragile and fleeting. Here, we’re highlighting the featured composers and their pieces!

@kianravaei’s “Unstoppable” is dedicated to those people in our lives who are truly unstoppable— the people who prevail in the face of obstacles, the people who are beaten down by life again and again but continue to get back up and push forward. This piece celebrates them by saying thank you.

@reenaesmail's “Piano Trio,” like her other compositions, straddles two of the world’s most sophisticated musical traditions; on one side is the art music of Europe and its system of tonal harmony, and the other is Hindustani classical music, organized around collections of tones called raags that go back centuries.

Oliver Caplan was inspired by the work of Hannah Fries, an author and close friend of his. Her poetry in “Wherever You Think There is Nothing” invites us to look deeply into the spaces where silence, rupture, and stillness reside, revealing that ‘nothingness’ is rarely empty.

@davebied’s “All we are given we cannot hold” is all about the fleeting and ephemeral, and the poetry he chose by Robert Fanning often captures some small, seemingly ordinary moment, and finds a profundity and beauty within it.

Tickets are still available for tonight and tomorrow’s performance! Visit the Linktree in our bio for more information. by @juventasmusic

Poet Hannah Fries introduces her poem, “Wherever You Think There is Nothing,” the text used in Oliver Caplan’s new piece under the same title. “There is something incredibly special to have a poem set to music,” she says. “I think of the poem itself as a vessel to try to hold or give shape to that original wordless impulse of feeling."

Join us this weekend for our season opener, All We Are! Artistic Director Oliver Caplan speaks about his piece, Wherever You Think There is Nothing, which is having its world premiere in this program. “The poem draws attention to spaces in our lives… A chamber of a flower blossom, the spiral of a shell… Places that we think of as nothing that really hold something.”
