OPENING THIS FRIDAY — “Julian V.L. Gaines: Fly in the Sugar Bowl”

This marks Gaines’s first solo show with the gallery, who will be present at the opening reception, Friday, May 15th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, coinciding with Tribeca Gallery Night.

Spanning painting, sculpture, and assemblage, the artist’s work examines the tensions between Black experience and the structures of systemic inequality in the United States. Gaines reimagines the realm of representation with his “JET BLACK” series, which reworks imagery from the mid-century publication Jet Magazine. In his painting “JET BLACK.17 (The First Leap Took Courage)” (2025), Michael Jordan emerges against uniform grounds with graphic elements. Suspended between portraiture and reproduction, this work foregrounds how Black identity has been framed and consumed, while reclaiming these images as sites of cultural authorship and self-definition.

Pleased to announce my second solo exhibition with @russoleegallery

Opening August 1

I was raised by women who refused to merely be seen, but not heard. Growing up in Chicago, JET Magazine was an integral part of our culture. The pocket-sized magazines were collected by my mother in a woven basket in the corner of our living room. Seeing my grandmother in the magazine as a nurse, instantly made her a celebrity in my eyes. JET magazine was social media well before Twitter or Instagram. The history documented and celebrated on those pages helped build the narrative foundation of my works. Every new issue of JET was a window onto another, wider world—a world suffused with dignity, glamour, respect, a healthy dose of weekly beauty, and, most importantly, a sense of possible, even probable futures unlike any I had witnessed.
