All the gratitude and love in my heart to these folks for spending time with me in my home state and bringing their all to my music over the past few days amidst their busy lives. We had a great session and an amazing hang.

I’m delighted to announce the upcoming release of my fifth album as a bandleader, Survival of the Fittest.

Far from being just a catchy title, Survival of the Fittest is a collection of songs I wrote and played during difficult times and a reminder of the hidden strength we all have within ourselves. As the Japanese proverb says, “Fall seven times, stand up eight.” I hope you’ll join me in standing up on May 16, 2025.

Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Corey DeRushia at Troubadour Recording Studios
Produced by Michael Dease.
Featuring the talents of Helen Sung, Terell Stafford, Rodney Whitaker, Lewis Nash, and Michael Dease along with yours truly. by @jvanhemusic

Last week, we had a wonderful IN SESSION: Maria Kim and Company event. The Church Studio really took such great care of us. Didn’t make it to the event? That’s okay. We’ll be releasing the album from the event soon!

The band, @mariakimjazz, @whitakerodney1 , and @lewisnashdrums, brought the heat on and off the bandstand, and I know my students enjoyed having them in residence last week. I’ll always remember this special experience making music with great people. taken in The Church Studio by @jvanhemusic

Amazing first rehearsal of the United Front Jazz Orchestra. Greg Simon has written some beautiful music and he has assembled a top notch cast of musicians to play it. Looking forward to the next few days with this great band. Amazing saxophone section of Matthew Storie, Matea Jerkovic, Andrew Janak, myself, and Bryan Canonigo. I’m so grateful to be able to make music with these incredible musicians on my fall break. by @jvanhemusic

It is an early morning at the Tulsa airport, and this place is busier than I have ever seen it. Heading out to record with @gregsimonmusic and the United Front Jazz Orchestra for their debut release on @hiddencinemarecords . Looking forward to seeing Greg, producer Ellen Rowe, and pianist @lisa.sung.jazz among many others! Looking forward to being on an artist panel tomorrow with the students at the @unlsofmusic as well!

Flying with more than a single saxophone is rare for me these days, so I don’t have a dedicated double case with my tenor. However, when I bought this Marco Magi case, @birdhouse.saxrepair at @meridianwinds mentioned offhand that I could fit a flute in the external storage pocket….and what do you know? 🤣🤣

Thanks to Ora Paul Haar for all your help in making it possible for me to participate in the session even flying in. by @jvanhemusic

【Jazzhead重量級特別企劃：Mini Show + Jam Session w/ Jocelyn Gould 四重奏】
A Jam Session hosted by Jocelyn Gould Quartet @ Jazzhead

Jocelyn Gould

Deep in the shed for Greg Simon’s debut big band recording session this week! Can’t wait to see and connect with everyone. This music is really cool and unlike much of what I have played before in a big band context, so I am finding myself trying to over prepare so I can deliver on the date of the session. Here’s a progress report — verdict? Much more work to be done!! Thank you, Greg, for trusting me with your music. taken in Lincoln, Nebraska by @jvanhemusic

It’s recital combo coaching season. Fun moments from today’s coaching.

Me: hey, I think this tune should probably go faster.

Students: how fast?

Me: well…I’ll just count you off.

Proud of the students for their work today. It’s just the beginning, not the end. It’s fun to work with them when they’re so driven. by @jvanhemusic
