A Hollywood film crew can fly a drone at Háifoss and Fjallabak. I can’t, and neither can other working photographers.

I’ve spent weeks digging into why, and the hypocrisy is hard to miss. So I’ve decided to seek my rights.

To be clear: Iceland hasn’t banned drones. You can still fly legally across most of the country. This is about drone permits on 25+ protected areas.

The Nature Conservation Agency refused my workshop permits, including in Fjallabak, some of the most beautiful land in the country, while film and advertising productions can still fly the same areas. Its own data says drones disturb neither visitors nor wildlife in the areas I have operated in for almost five years. I’ve appealed my case to the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Climate.

The Icelandic Professional Photographers Association (@ljosmyndarafelagislands) has backed the case, calling the practice discrimination against the whole profession.

The maddening part: the same agency already gets this right in Vatnajökull National Park, with sensible, area-based rules. The banned areas could use the very same model.

Full story on my website, in English and Icelandic (link in bio).

Five years ago today, the first eruption of Fagradalsfjall volcano began after an 800-year volcanic hiatus on Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland. Can you believe it?! 🌋🌋🌋

It feels like yesterday when I left my home with a camera backpack that was way too heavy, a gas mask and a head full of determination & motivation. After a 4 hour hike through a lava field, that doesn’t even exist anymore today, I finally witnessed my first eruption. I will never forget that first glimpse of the eruption: the heat, the sounds, the dynamics of it. But what I remember even more was that overwhelming sense of awe, a childlike giddiness and the many excited people I spoke to, who were running around like children with unlimited freedom in a photographic toy store.

What followed after that initial encounter was a rollercoaster that changed my entire life. I quit my day job, started up my photography business and pursued a life in dedication to nature photography. I am so grateful for what I have been able to experience and what opportunities it has created for me. I have not looked back ever since.

What will the next five years bring? I can’t wait to find out!

📷 This footage was captured over the last 5 years using a variety of Canon cameras (EOS R6, EOS R5 & EOS R5 Mark II) and a variety of DJI drones (Mavic 2 Pro, Air 2S, Mavic 3 Classic, Mavic 3 Pro & Mavic 4 Pro).

‼️ As always: real footage, real speed!

It’s been a while… so let me re-introduce myself 👋

My name is Jeroen. I am a Belgian-Icelandic professional landscape & wildlife photographer, calling Iceland home for the past 10 years 🇮🇸

What started as a passion slowly turned into a full-time life behind the camera, sharing the raw, otherworldly beauty of this island in the North Atlantic.

The last 5 years especially have been a wild ride.
Dreams I never dared to take for granted became reality:

🌋 Experiencing & capturing volcanic eruptions up close
❄️ Exploring Antarctica & Greenland
📖 Publishing a book
📷 Hosting numerous photography workshops
🤝 Meeting so many incredible people through photography

And honestly, I’m grateful for every single moment.

I feel incredibly honored and privileged that so many of you, from all corners of the world, follow and support my work. Every like, comment, and message helps me keep doing what I love.

With many more adventures ahead, from Greenland to the Icelandic Highlands and back to Antarctica, there’s a lot more to come.

Thank you for being here. Truly. 🙏

📷 I decided to make a little compilation of some of my favourite volcano footage recorded on a variety of Canon cameras and using DJI drones.

PS: Say ‘hi’ in the comments and let me know where you’re from. I am super curious what corners of the world my work reaches!

One year ago today, the ground opened at Sundhnúkagígar for what turned out to be the last time… at least so far. I remember that early morning really well. I had just woken up to leave the country for a week's holiday, discovering a new eruption had begun unexpectedly about 5 minutes before. On the way to the airport, I drove past a fissure that wasn't even half an hour old and I treated it like… well, like another morning in Iceland😅 A week later I came home and it was still going. In the days that followed, I dedicated most of my time to capturing as many images as I could and I was fortunate enough to capture some of my favourite photographs I've ever taken: the steam clouds drifting and folding around the erupting crater. We are now almost a full year of quiet since then and I still can't quite believe it. After watching this peninsula go up again and again, a year of not seeing any lava at all feels like the strange part, not the seemingly endless series of eruptions themselves. Who knows what will happen next there! 🌋

For years, I dreamed of capturing the images in this carousel. A few weeks ago, on a photo workshop I hosted in West Greenland, I finally got to take them. 🐳

We were incredibly lucky to watch a pod of humpback whales feasting on capelin close to the shores of Disko Bay. And not just once... but several days in a row. That is something I had never dared to dream of.

To me, the skill and intelligence these gentle creatures show when bubble-net feeding is one of the most magical things you can find in nature. Watching some of the largest animals on our planet move with that much agility humbles me every single time.

I’ve loved whales for as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories is a whale watching trip in Norway, setting out to find sperm whales, then coming home to draw the flukes we’d seen for weeks afterwards. And even now, after countless encounters, I am equally excited, equally fascinated & equally humbled when one decides to come take a closer look at our boat.

A few weeks ago, I hosted my annual photo workshop focusing on photographing the Atlantic Puffin, one of my favourite bird species. During the workshop, we had an incredible amount of variation in the weather conditions ranging from stormy conditions to calm & bright nights, filled with midnight sun. That in turn meant a lot of variation in the images we were able to capture. I think the puffins really shine in stormy conditions, which gives them a lot more character and expression. Which image is your favourite?

📷 For this occasion I borrowed the Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8 Z lens from @canon.island (takk!) and used it in combination with the Canon R6 Mark III and R5 Mark II. I also used my trusty Canon RF 100-500mm which will forever remain my favourite lens I think!

😅 Whoops, it has been almost a month since my last post here on Instagram! I guess that shows how busy I have been! Since my last post I have been running several photography workshops back to back so the next days and weeks I will be drip-feeding new material onto my social media channels.

A few weeks ago, on a moody day, I went for a drive into Þórsmörk, which is a secluded area behind the Eyjafjallajökull volcano (remember the 2010 eruption?). It’s one of the areas I got to know during my very first visit to Iceland in 2012. And it’s one of the areas that made me fall in love with this incredible country that is now my home. I have since visited this place countless times and I don’t think I will ever get bored of it.

This little excursion to Þórsmörk was also the perfect opportunity to give the DJI Lito 1 a try. The Lito 1 is DJI’s cheapest beginner drone and can be a great, no fuss, travel companion. I flew this little drone over the mountains, rivers, narrow canyons and even deep into a glacier. Enjoy!

With summer being just around the corner here in Iceland, I had a look through some of my images from last summer. These cute arctic foxes were photographed in the remote Hornstrandir nature reserve. While staying in a remote valley with one of my groups, we were fortunate enough to see the new-born cubs brave their way outside of the protectiveness of their den. Every day we stayed there, the cubs became more and more confident. Have you ever seen an Arctic fox up close? #iceland

📷 All of these images were taken using the Canon EOS R5 in combination with the Canon RF 200-800mm lens.

Gazing into the mesmerising lava lake which formed inside the only large crater of the Litli-Hrútur eruption in the summer of 2023 in Iceland. In the middle you can see the fresh magma broiling up to the surface, which then gets pushed towards the outside of the crater. I love looking at all the details in this footage: the large gas bubbles that burst on the surface, the glowing ripples in the partially solidified lava lake or small patches of lava that gradually start to turn black as they cool down. I have to be honest, a small screen really doesn’t do it all the justice it deserves. What do you notice in this clip? #iceland

📷 I recorded this clip with the 7x zoom lens on the DJI Mavic 3 Pro. Because that day was incredibly windy, I managed to fly quite low which is how my drone got away without even the slightest damage.

Tomorrow, we celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s birthday who will turn 100 years old! To celebrate this remarkable milestone, I thought I’d share some of my favourite shots from over the years. It’s safe to say that David Attenborough has had an enormous impact in my love for the natural world and my pursuit of landscape & wildlife photography. I have always been incredibly fascinated by the amazing documentaries he has been a part of. It’s no understatement that they have inspired me to seek out the marvels of our planet. But he has not only inspired me. By spending his life in service of nature, he has inspired several generations of nature photographers, filmmakers and nature enthusiasts. He inspired them to not only explore and cherish our home but also to protect it, a message which has become increasingly more important.

Here’s to sir David Attenborough (@davidattenborough) and to his legacy! 🥂🎈

📷 These images were captured over the years on Canon EOS R6, R5, R5 Mark II & R6 Mark III, as well as DJI Mavic 2 Pro, Air 2S, Mavic 3 Pro and Mavic 4 Pro.
