“Jealous“ by Eyedress. It’s the TikTok hit off his 2020 album Let’s Skip to the Wedding, and he wrote it after relocating to America from the Philippines. The song is a cold, distant take on love, where jealousy works as a defense mechanism and vulnerability turns into distance. He brushes off a partner who needs support and pushes everyone away, which makes it feel like a haunting counter-narrative to typical love songs. Eyedress himself has said the song lyrically represented who he was at the time, and that he dealt with a lot of mental health issues growing up, so the isolation feels real instead of just an act.

“Superstar“ by Lupe Fiasco featuring Matthew Santos, off The Cool (2007). It’s about fame and what it really means to be a star, with Lupe looking at the pull of celebrity while also pushing back on how empty it can be. At the same time, the chorus turns it into an encouraging message, telling listeners they have the potential to shine in their own way. You don’t need a spotlight or a crowd to be a star, because your talent and how you carry yourself are what count. The soulful hook from Matthew Santos balances Lupe’s more thoughtful verses, which makes it feel hopeful instead of preachy.

The Magician remix is one of those rare remixes that arguably outshines the original. Lykke Li’s original is moody and dark, and the Magician’s version turns it into a pulsing deep house track that feels euphoric but still keeps the obsessive, longing edge underneath. That contrast is what makes it work: the song is about devoted, almost consuming love, and the glossy dance beat makes it feel like a late-night drive you don’t want to end. It’s a great one to put on when you want something danceable that still has some emotional weight.

“Heartless” by Kanye West. It’s off 808s & Heartbreak (2008), and it’s about the bitterness of a relationship that fell apart, with him calling out a partner he sees as cold and calculating. He feels like he gave her everything and she still walked away without a second thought. The song comes from a place of hurt and emotional shutdown, which is what makes it so relatable for anyone who’s been left feeling numb after a breakup.

“Las Noches” by Junior H, a heartbreak song from his 2023 album $AD BOYZ 4 LIFE II. It’s about longing and the struggle to move on from a past love. He’s stuck replaying old memories and still waiting for someone who’s long gone, even though he’s exhausted by it. He also seems to realize her affection was never real and that he can’t change how she feels, but he keeps thinking about the nights they shared. The soulful guitars and melancholy trumpets make it feel like a late-night confession, which is exactly what it is.

“Hustler’s Ambition” by 50 Cent. It’s the opening track of the Get Rich or Die Tryin’ soundtrack, and 50 raps mostly about his life before getting rich. The meaning comes down to ambition as a survival instinct rather than just a career goal, a dream shaped by street economics and the hunger for something beyond his circumstances. What I get out of it is that the grind is fueled by adversity, and he’s turning survival into identity.

“Cash” by Lil Baby is one of those songs that sounds like a flex but has more going on underneath. It’s off Harder Than Ever from 2018, and he treats money as proof of how far he’s come. The way I see it, cash works as armor for him, since he’s also talking about protecting what he’s built. The beat is hard and spacious, so his voice does most of the work. Triumphant on the surface, watchful underneath.

Chinx, formerly known as Chinx Drugz, was born Lionel Pickens on December 4, 1983, and grew up in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York. He was a member of The Rockaway Riot Squad alongside fellow rapper Stack Bundles before joining French Montana’s Coke Boys Records, where he gained recognition through the Coke Boys mixtapes and the Cocaine Riot series. His biggest single was “I’m a Coke Boy,” which became the unofficial Coke Boys anthem. Around 2013 he dropped “Drugz” from his name and went by just Chinx as part of a new, more marketable image. He was killed in a drive-by shooting in Jamaica, Queens on May 17, 2015, at age 31, and he’s remembered as one of the most visible members of the Coke Boys crew.

“Tu Príncipe” by Daddy Yankee featuring Zion & Lennox is about a man who has fallen for a woman but is too nervous to confess it, and wants to be more than just her friend. Each artist takes a verse to show how badly he wants her, feeling close to her and far away at the same time, while the chorus is his hope that she feels the same and will let him be her prince. It’s a romantic, slightly vulnerable song from Barrio Fino, and it shows a softer side of reggaeton compared to the club-heavy tracks on the album.

“Love Yourz” by J. Cole is about appreciating the life you have instead of chasing someone else’s, with the message that no one else’s life is actually better than yours. It pushes back on the idea that money, fame, or status automatically bring happiness, since people at the top deal with their own struggles too. What I get from it is a reminder to be grateful for where you are in the moment, especially when it’s easy to compare yourself to everyone else. It comes from his 2014 album 2014 Forest Hills Drive, which is rooted in his childhood home, and that grounded feel is a big part of why the message hits.

Let’s talk about Maddix. Real name Pablo Rindt, a Dutch DJ and producer from Eindhoven who started on drums and piano as a kid before finding dance music at 15. His sound blends trance and techno with big room EDM, and it’s only gotten faster and harder over the years. Tracks like “Heute Nacht” and “My Gasoline” put him on the map, and he’s played huge stages like Ultra Music Festival, Parookaville, and Mysteryland. He was even ranked #69 in DJ Mag’s 2024 Top 100 DJs poll, and he runs his own label, Extatic Records. If you haven’t heard him yet, start with “Mix the Master” and thank me later.

“we fell in love in october” by girl in red is a tender, nostalgic love song about the early, giddy stage of falling for someone in the fall. It captures the feeling of wanting to freeze a perfect moment, with the season setting a cozy, slightly bittersweet backdrop. The soft, lo-fi bedroom-pop production and her gentle, almost whispered delivery make it feel like a private confession.
