Informed by Jose’s experience in somatics, meditation and the queer club space, you will use movement to generate present moment awareness and collective joy whilst dancing together and alone. The focus is on embodiment — both the sensory experience of inhabiting a body and how movement might help us access or embody certain ideas or images.

Today is African Emancipation Day in the UK, an important moment to remember that, despite endless efforts to distort history, the 500-year holocaust of plantation slavery did not end because of Western benevolence. Though its logics continue in many forms of labour exploitation today, plantation slavery ended because of sustained collective struggle: through maroonage, sabotage, refusal, boycotts, radical education, the dissemination of subversive literature, and an unyielding commitment to cultural and artistic traditions that carried spiritual, political and communal significance for African and Black diasporic people.

Over the last few months we have been working together to develop a reparations learning game for our communities and the organisations that resource them. We chose to create something rooted in African heritage value systems, esoteric knowledges and divination traditions because, as Audre Lorde reminds us, “the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house.” We believe that play, storytelling and collective learning can become part of the ongoing work of imagining and building liberatory futures.

This game is one small contribution to that tradition, and we are filled with deep gratitude for everyone who has helped shape it so far. Thank you to everyone who joined our first and second play-throughs. We are learning so much through this process, and having a lot of fun along the way. 🐚✨🌱

What does the collective soul of humanity sing in its last breath?

Somerset House Studios artist Jose Funnell (@jwfunnell) explores this through a series of lamentations, an embodied attempt to grieve the present state of humanity.

In this collaboration with @lie__ning, Jose draws on the figure of the zombie, rooted in Haitian Voodoo and the horrors of slavery, repurposed as a metaphor for consumption and collapse.

This performance took place in December 2025 as part of Grounding Practice: Performance Symposium.

✴️ Interdisciplinary artist, dancer and activist @jwfunell is also taking part in our current season, Then & There vol 2

-

Jose Funnell is an interdisciplinary artist, dancer and activist based in London. Through live performance, sound, film and the workshop space, they explore the radical potential of embodiment as a site of liberation, healing and exchange in service of collective transformation.

Using somatics, social dance, and various technologies of the gaze, their work examines practices of looking and representing as historic mechanisms of power, as well as the role fantasy and collective imagery play in world building.
Working towards creating anti-oppressive structures, justice and equity, their practice brings awareness to the experiential dynamics of sharing space and the emancipatory potential of generating agency within contexts of marginalisation.

Join us 25.05.2024 for a transformative somatic movement and dance workshop exploring the relationship between self-perception and the external gaze led by interdisciplinary artist and dancer @jwfunnell

Expect:
◽ Accessible movement explorations
◽ Mindfulness exercises
◽ Reflection on what it means to be seen

We'll also delve into our embodied relationships with mobile phones, bringing awareness to the psychosomatic effects of a life mediated by devices.

Discover a fundamental sense of being by connecting to your body and finding comfort in the present moment.

✳️This workshop is open to all, no dance experience needed.
