It was dumb luck, really, that I found myself as Bill Knott’s daughter-in-law nearly 30 years ago. There were so few chances available and somehow I ended up in a father / daughter connection that would become one of the most important relationships of my life. The interest in our lives and the presence he demonstrated was so different from what I had experienced until that point. It healed so much in me.

Pops was incredible and talented and kind. He excelled at photography, gardening, travel, entrepreneurship, exploration and most importantly - as a humorist, family man, and friend.

When we chose to leave Chicago and raise our family near him in Utah, along with Amy’s three daughters, we couldn’t have imagined the adventures we would embark on (at his lead) and the generosity and love our girls would be shown by him. There’s a direct thread to Pops’ personality, humor, and sense of wonder in each of them.

In the last year, as he began to slow down, I wanted to make sure he was having experiences that he felt connected to and made him feel alive. We had one last night at the opera and one last day boating around Lake Powell. We spent every holiday near him - with a little worry it would be his last.

As luck would have it, my schedule allowed me to stay with Pops the last nine days at the hospital in Provo with Amy, Craig, and I rotating the long, difficult nights. Going from hope to the realization we would not get the outcome we wanted was humbling and painful. The up close experience of caring for his failing body and comforting him while he comforted us is time I will cherish for the rest of my life.

We got him home just in time to pass away surrounded by all the family that loved him.

It wouldn’t be a tribute to Pops unless it ended with laughter so I will share some of his last words. As we all did what we could to make him comfortable on Wednesday, Pops began fiddling with his phone, trying to open Spotify to listen to his favorite opera playlist. Amy got it started and he pieced together a few breathless words to tell her to finally go ahead and “Get the Spotify Premium” so it wouldn’t be interrupted by ads his last day on earth. 😊 by @jwolfeauthor

Late Wednesday night, I said goodbye to my dad, the legendary Bill Knott. I was with him when he took his last breath while he held my mom’s hand and listened to his opera playlist. He spent his last hours surrounded by the family who adored him, and who will never stop missing him.

He was the heart of my family. For me, he was the person who made me fall in love with storytelling. He modeled the kind of lifelong friendships I want with my friends. He was always game for adventure, and loved his work. He knew how to live, and how to seek joy. He was everything a dad should be and so much more. 💔

It’s an event I hoped would never come but yesterday my Dad passed away at home with family and loved ones there to see him off on his next adventure.

He and my mom were transplants to the Carbon County community, starting in 1970 but said he felt at home here.

He started Bill’s Home Furnishings in 1975 and worked the Plateau coal mine until the store grew enough to do it full time. Over the years the store moved a few times as it grew. He loved “the store” as we called it and worked at least part time until he was in his 80s. He loved talking to people, leading his employees, and the challenge of running a successful business in Eastern Utah.
He loved to explore ideas, experimenting with new promotions and marketing ideas. There are probably a few people who still remember when the circus came to town and he convinced the promoter to have their elephant stop by his store after the parade and lay down on one of his Serta mattresses. A huge crowd gathered to see if the mattress could hold up - and it did! He had a little PT Barnum in him, for sure.

I look back and see what a huge influence he had on me. It never ceased to amaze me in the years since moving away that I meet someone from Price and say my Dad owns Bill’s Home Furnishings, they would always say “I know Bill!” He knew how to connect with anyone. He could
relate to coal miners and business people, employees and customers, old ladies and young people. He unintentionally mentored so many friends, grandkids, or employees.

Whether it was leading adventures to Buckhorn Wash, pulling shenanigans at Lake Powell, or telling funny stories around the campfire, he was always up for a good time.

He was a legend and the most fun loving dad that anyone could ask for. We will miss you Pops! taken in Price, Utah by @jwolfeauthor
