George Floyd. For 8m and 46s, MN police robbed a man of his last free breaths. All over a fake $20 bill that could’ve come from anywhere. That was enough for police to hold him down like an animal, rob him of his dignity and due process, and exacerbate an already strained trust between the community and those who have chosen to “protect and serve”.

I am a dad to beautiful biracial kids. In America, being black is all an officer needs to see to be scared, draw his weapon and within seconds unload life ending/altering decisions into you. I’m terrified every day that I’ll get a call informing me that, regardless of how my children acted or behaved, a police officer ended their life because they felt “intimidated” or didn’t like the look on their faces.

The conversation is far from over. We cannot stop talking about Americans who lost their lives at the hands of bigoted cops who weren’t there to protect, but rather to impose the power they’re paid to have onto citizens who needed them. This post is meant to honor #GeorgeFloyd, his family and his memory. I hope they get the justice they deserve. #SayHisName.

Anxiety. It’s something that’s held me back from sharing my artwork for as long as I’ve been an artist. When I was younger, entire paintings would just end up in the dumpster behind my first and second apartment. It’s been a constant struggle... until recently. I’ve watched my partner, daughter and son go full force into their own creative endeavors with an infectious excitement, courage and pride. Watching them has made me reconsider what it is I’m really anxious about. Fear of vulnerability. Of sharing my failures and my triumphs as an artist. I can’t be that person anymore, bending to hypothetical mockery/laughter that only exists in my head, and I owe it to myself and those who’ve believed in me to give this all I’ve got. Life is too short to do anything else.
