challenged
myself and put myself in rooms I had not made space for
because I knew that not only did my body yearn for DANCE but my mental state NEEDED this much more.

Radiation treatments: maybe because I have a love for sci-fi I found some lightness where darkness lurks. The simple moments of routine. It felt like I was in some luxury space hotel getting zapped by lasers with guided breath work. I’m so grateful for every single radiation therapist that delivered my daily treatments. They made every step feel safe and comforting. They are heroes.
5 days is a short stint, preventative routine checks was key to catching it early and having a short treatment but I still see this as luck and am again grateful because what I’ve learned in this process is that we have no control over any of it.
Today marks my last follow up of the year. 6.5 months after getting “the call”. The last 8 months have been incredibly hard, scary, thrilling, sad, invigorating, reclaiming, rewarding and a total rollercoaster with radioactive lasers. I am grateful for my drive to take action and proud of myself that I have been able to provide for myself throughout this. I know I did not do this alone, as my support system that surrounds me is one that dreams are made of. I’m officially in remission. What a weird word. Cancer. The word you never want to hear. The punch in the gut in a void of unknown next steps. More tests to determine plan of care. Don’t be a burden. Wristband barcodes sitting in waiting rooms. Preventative was key. One step at a time. Keep busy. In hope to eliminate the inevitable spirals. Keep focused. Ultimately becoming someone else. Breathe. We caught it early.
how lucky am I.
As this chapter closes and the milestones now approach, I need to be honest with myself and accept that I’m not the same person anymore. I am ready to expand into this new space as I’m a tree that grows hearts. Focusing to choose joy knowing that the storms will come but my roots are nurtured and strong.
I know how lucky I am with my journey and I remind myself of it daily. I’m immensely grateful for my support team - a dream medical team, MSK, family, my beloved circle, and the ones that I didn’t tell, you kept it normal. It’s hard to share.
I can’t do the one on ones anymore, as it’s been a consistent uphill battle for me to even say out loud. Avoiding the “how are you?” from friends because it’s hard to not be REAL when I’m everywhere, so I say nothing, but this is not me,
I don’t like sneaking around secrets and in all honesty, it keeps the trauma cycling and eventually bleeds. But above it all, if it can help, just one person get checked, get preventative care then it’s worth it. It’s worth me sharing this scary chapter.
Being vulnerable is scary.
Keeping it in is scarier
