“‘Accent’ works the same way: it can mean the particular accent you carry in your speech, or it can mean a diacritical mark, an emphasis, a distinguishing quality. It mirrors our identity. We are not speaking in standard English—but we are bringing something unique, strong, and plural.” — Jiaoyang Li

Started as a writing community in 2019, “重音社 Accent Society” grew out of a desire to share resources and find resonance with those writing in a second language. By 2022, the online space had expanded into Accent Sisters—a bookstore, publisher, exhibition venue, and workshop site in Jersey City. Through its following iterations—a pop-up basement known as “Accent Temple” in Chinatown to its current location in a complex near Union Square—Accent Sister creates gathering places for Chinese-speaking, multilingual artists, writers, musicians, and students that move fluidly between online and physical worlds.

In conversation with Yindi Chen and Yutong Shi, artist-writer and co-founder, Jiaoyang Li, and manager Alison Long speak about Accent Sisters' unsteady beginnings, the struggles behind its flourishing present, and the constant involvement of labor and love.

In Zen Buddhism, a 𝘬𝘰𝘢𝘯 (公案) is a question that cannot be answered by logic — only lived with, sat with, until something shifts. Cat Koan takes this as its premise: Tango’s comics are the riddles cats would write if they could, their own impossible questions about how the world works. A slipper becomes a schoolbag. A chat bubble takes the shape of a cat’s ear. Beneath the moonlight, an ATM machine leaves only the letters C-A-T as a cat tugs at a curtain. These scenes, landing like metaphors, are koans of cats.

Come check out the exhibition at Accent Sisters this two weeks. Framed small-format works and Tango’s Wonton Cat collectible toys are available for purchase — for those who need a minor deity of their own.

A Cute Pain

Hello Kitty is cute precisely because she has no mouth to express herself with. We’re meant to project our own emotions onto her, which makes her the ideal cute companion, according to Sanrio’s logic. Maybe Hello Kitty is in deep pain, but her lack of a mouth prevents her from voicing this to us. All we know is that she’s cute, but what if Hello Kitty could talk? Perhaps if Hello Kitty went to art therapy, it would look like this exhibit.

Curated by Jiaoyang Li and presented at Accent Sisters, The Archaeology of Cute ✦ The Monument of Pain explores “cuteness” as a portal for rebellious and uncontrollable sensations which defy neatly outlined categories or diagnoses.

Along with @milam.music ‘s immersive sound embedded in cold plunge aims to unfold our body.

This will be an experience with extreme heat, cold, sound and visual experience created by us:) Hope you can join us.
