Best movie of the year is out today, a masterpiece pushing up against the limits of the medium.

Hard to know where to start with what makes this so special. As character study, as a formalist visual and sonic experience, as a suspense thriller playing out as a series of interrogations.

In the end, nothing is exempt from interrogation, not the previous depictions and investigations of Elizabeth, not even their own filmmaking apparatus.

And it’s outrageous. Some of the physical behavior of the central couple is so compelling to watch, they’d both get Oscars if only it weren’t all real.

Worth mentioning this rollout as well. The ability to create this hype and make an event out of a documentary through restraint needs to be studied. Nobody knew this existed before a little over a month ago. The risk of such restraint is it can only be done if the film truly has the goods. Go see it with an audience.

As the festival run draws to a close, I’m pleased to announce Subway Stops will have its streaming home on the Slamdance Channel for the foreseeable future.

Wonderful full circle after the film had such a memorable world premiere at Slamdance a year ago. Will be forever grateful to them and their good taste.

You can view the film here:

This is my niece Claire.

She turned 9 months a couple days before these pictures and is never too busy to pose for the camera.
