Mount Whitney Trail Report | Thursday, October 29
Summited today around noon. We saw roughly 8–10 other people summit, and the summit register had a handful of successful entries from the previous day.

We originally had a Friday permit, but we’d been tracking the weather and were fortunate to get a Thursday walk-in permit through the rangers.

Left Whitney Portal at 2:30 a.m., summited around noon, and returned to the trailhead around 6:45 p.m. About 16 hours and 15 minutes car to car.

Conditions we encountered:

• Starting roughly two miles in, ice covered substantial portions of the trail on the approach to Trail Camp.

• The 99 Switchbacks had a well-packed snow track following yesterday’s clear weather.

• From Trail Crest toward the summit, we encountered some postholing, but the snow was generally firm, with an established track visible for much of the route.

• Around 1 p.m., weather began moving in from the southwest, bringing light snow flurries.

We also encountered several people without crampons, an ice axe, or a helmet. Given the conditions and incoming weather, I encouraged quite a few to seriously consider turning around. The number of people still heading up seemingly unprepared was concerning. I’ll leave it at that.

These are observations from our trip today. A packed track and firm snow can change quickly with new snow, wind, and temperature changes.

We had so much fun out there. A long, demanding day on a beautiful mountain, and grateful to have made it up and back safely.

Wrapping up my weekly mileage with a 20 mile long run at Sugar Loaf in Yuma Arizona. @blackcanyonultras is coming up and @nathan.clifton.7 and I can't wait to throw down with the 1k plus runners in Black Canyon City.

Recap from climbing Thompson Peak yesterday in the McDowell reserves. This climb had a 1,000ft climb in 1 mile and you have to do a 10k over a mountain pass just to get to the cherry on top. 💪. by @jzogruns

Saturday morning Rise and Run in the Desert of Yuma which was alive this morning. Nathan Clifton and I were twinning with that PCT shirt. Lots of 🐐 and even met a gal named Annie on her horse Lee riding and we're both doing the Man verse Horse race in Prescot in October... albeit, I'm running the 50 miles and she's riding.. we'll see who wins. Great times with Goaty for a 13 mile looper at the Loafs. by @jzogruns

Today's message: Muddy Cars are Welcome in God's car wash 🙏

"I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."
