excited to introduce and highlight work by los angeles-based artist, jake ziemann (@jzziemann). originally from des moines, iowa, ziemann studied at the school of art institute of chicago and california college of the arts, san francisco.

fueled by themes of intimacy, gender, and sexuality, jake ziemann’s sculptures balance bodily shapes with everyday objects and industrial support. through material dualities and formal gestures, his work blends notions of stability and vulnerability, the found and the handmade, and the abstract and the figurative.

induction gallery is thrilled to present works by jake ziemann alongside emma kearney’s solo exhibition “my body is my templon” in the gallery’s viewing room, opening saturday, april 25th.

I’ve been developing this vein of work alongside my sculptures for quite some time, and I’m pleased to share it more broadly!

For me, these pieces strike an exciting balance between the seductive and the awkward. By giving seemingly ordinary materials a heightened presence, they complicate distinctions between craft and painting, utility and ornament.

Jake Ziemann’s 'Staplework' draws loosely from wood grain patterns, coloring-book landscapes, and fragmented bodily forms,—the layered compositions are both recognizable and abstract, shifting between painting, textile, and object. Staples—typically hidden as functional support—become surface, mark, and embellishment, transforming modest supplies into shimmering lines that resemble contour drawings or patterns. Accumulated across cut-fabric supports, the stapled lines produce imagery that is at once precise and decorative yet irregular and strange.

Ziemann’s textile-based paintings combine utilitarian materials—staples, mesh screen, thread, used drop cloths, paint can lids, raw linen, and colored canvas—with systems of pattern and ornament alongside abstracted landscape and bodily reference. Through repetition and layering, the work blends labor and decoration, support and status, and the industrial and the handmade.

Jake Ziemann’s work balances bodily forms with everyday objects and industrial supports. Through material dualities and formal gestures, he explores the tensions between stability and vulnerability, the found and the handmade, and the abstract and the figurative. Using materials evocative of the artist’s studio and construction, his sculptures reflect the labor of building relationships with others and the world around him.
