In a process of postmortem self-destruction, the body’s enzymes dissolve dying cells while microorganisms originating in the gastrointestinal tract break down proteins.
The resulting putrefaction leads to discolouration of the skin and liquefaction of soft tissues.
The corpse attracts flies in a matter of minutes, which lay their eggs in all orifices. Subsequent maggot masses contribute significantly to the dissolving of flesh.
As the decomposition proceeds, fatty tissue may evolve into a white, greasy substance called adipocere. The skin will shift over time and develop creases and tears, wherefore gases bloating the cadaver are released.
