📍Lauterbrunnen
Steeply rising rock faces. Hidden depths. Waterfalls like liquid light.
🏔️🏔️🏔️
When JRR Tolkien travelled through the Lauterbrunnen Valley in 1911, he encountered a landscape that would decisively shape his work.
🏔️🏔️🏔️
Here, the inner image of Rivendell was formed that Elven sanctuary which, in The Lord of the Rings, represents healing, wisdom, and protection. A place shielded from the world, yet of overwhelming beauty. Tolkien had never before or since encountered a comparable mountain landscape.
🏔️🏔️🏔️
Above the valley rise the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. In Tolkien's fantasy world, they live on as Celebdil, Caradhras, and Fanuidhol, the "Cloudy Head ." And deep within the mountain, the echo of Khazad dûm reverberates those stone halls and staircases of Moria, whose visions were shaped by the alpine impressions of this journey.
🏔️🏔️🏔️
While Tolkien was here, the Jungfrau Railway, a technical marvel, was being built in the heart of the mountain. Natural forces and human courage met a motif that also runs through Middle earth.
🏔️🏔️🏔️
The Lauterbrunnen Valley is not just a place.
It is a source.
