"Alright, so close your eyes. Now, just stand there for a sec as I try and find that light flare.. can you move slightly to the left?
Your not centre now is all from me here... no, sorry, your eyes are closed. Sorry, I meant my left.... ok... now open you're eyes"
.
And he opens and looks at me bent over at a weird angle.
.
I can only imagine what I looked like, and then I can seriously no longer remember what I said to him to make him laugh. But he did. It released the tension from me being so specific on the angle and how he stands and where, etc... then he relaxed... these are shown in reverse order, from the end (my favourite) to the start where I had him close his eyes because the light was reflecting off the building opposite and blinding him.
.
I love that flare... and I love that progression.
.
I miss those days of chasing light all round Melbourne. Grabbing dramatic light rays and shadows and messing about with some amazing street photographers!

~ .... Sydney
.
A little while ago, Yu Xuan and I managed to get away for a little while... so with a free airfare and choices of anywhere to go for a super quick little getaway.... we decided Sydney.
.
We arrived at night and immediately went down to the opera house (as we were staying within walking distance), and I pointed to the bridge and the opera house lit up in all their glory... it was a nice moment.
.
Yu Xuan has never been, and to be fair, walking around the city the next day... he kept saying, "It's like Singapore.
.... and to be fair.... he's not wrong!
.
The architecture is similar in the city to parts of Singapore, the weather is similar, plants are similar... it's like the sister of Singapore.
.
My camera hates low light, and I didn't get to take real photos (of those landmarks) till the last day after checking out and before we had to run off to the airport.
.
It's a super quick trip that we need to do again and take more time to explore. by @k.port.7

~ Ray ~

This was a while ago... so long ago now..
.
But you know when you meet those people that rub against some some core truth you have about yourself and your own life... that's what this was.
.
Ray has a totally different outlook on life to what I am normally hearing from the people around me.... and during our morning together, I found myself saying... 'Dang it, so true!' More often than what I care to admit.
.
This is one thing I miss about taking portraits... that sort of openess you gwt... that openess you foster with your client, and there are some that nod with nervousness.... and then there's Ray.
.
Ready for a challenge (and to borrow a line from Shakespeare, 'bites his thumb at'... whatever may come) ... and he's there, uncomfortably sat infront of my lens, smiling and laughing and having the time of his life... every scene wr captured.. there is a serious shot, and a soul shining blast of laughter from deep down in his soul...
.
Only truly shiny happy people do that.
.
It was a nice morning to meet Ray, and I'm glad I did. taken in South Melbourne Beach by @k.port.7

~ one moment ~
.
Looking back over some of my favourite memories of my life.. and this memory, with Yu Xuan. This was the strong light and colours of the landscape... and the wind had started here... but this was before the wind became insanely strong. We strolled under blue skys and warm sun, calmly taking photos and exploring... not knowing that in 30minutes the wind would pick up.. and in another hour, we would be leaning into the wind to remain standing while we watched it evaporate the water away from the salt bed faster than either of us could run!
Whipping up the water into a spray and ripping hold in the clouds bathing everything in golden light...
.
I love our little trips and exploring the world together... the two of us in a car and exploring. We see things differently but same. We each notice the things the other doesn't while still seeing the same overall picture.

~ Into the Wild
.
This was seeming so long ago now.. @pixelmonki organised another photo walk, but this was the 1st one he had done in conjunction with @sigmaphotoaustralia
.
This was epic! So many people! A really large group stretched out through half the park as we all got amongst nature, shooting among the trees in the dappled light.
The location was a favourite memory of mine, since during one of the breaks in a lockdown, we had caught up with a small group and shot there... amazing memories! But this, it was crazy to see how much this place had grown! The grasses we previously crouched in now towered... the trees so much bigger and stronger.. the park has thrived in this place.
.
And we were here with a huge amount of creative talent, creating art... new creatives and experienced... new friends and old family... I love/ miss moments like this...
I can't wait for the next one! taken in Westgate Park by @k.port.7

~ from here... to there...
.
"I mean, it's pink for sure... but it's amazing how much the light affects it... the brighter the light, the whiter the salt... then on the 2nd night all that gold in the sunset reflecting in the crystals making the whole lake golden too... this hole area makes me think that this is what being trapped inside a giant opal would be like!"
(Excerpt from my travel journal)
.
The 1st day was all pinks and blues and purples... the 2nd day was all gold... It's amazing how quickly and totally this place changes... there's no half measures... and all of it amazing!
.
It was much needed... getting out and exploring with @lee_yuxuan_ again... and I find I am more and more always planning our next location on my down moments... Me, Yu Xuan and the open road... bliss. taken in Lake Tyrrell by @k.port.7

~ the 1st of many

" It felt so good to be back out there taking photos again. It was really lucky there was a photo walk happening when Cap was over from Johannesburg!
It was so good!! Keith did such a good job organising it! I look forward to doing more of these... maybe even start helping to host some again"
(Excerpt from my journal)
.
It had been a long time, and finally came out for @pixelmonki Keith's beginners photo walk... and I just so happened that it was on the same weekend Cap @matthewkanniah was in town and I was able to take him along to one (he was part of the crew that really looked after me all those years ago in Jo'burg)
.
But I also felt a real sense of community and felt part of a group again... getting out and getting creative... I wanted to get out more.
.
And I love that Keith has organised more of these events too... and I am really looking forward to his next event!! taken in Port Melbourne Beach by @k.port.7

~ 5 min phenomenon
.
" 'WTF!' Was pretty much all I could say. The wind was crazy strong. You could actually see the water evaporating from the salt at an immense rate, and it was being picked up from the pink salt in a fine spray mist of salt water.
We had made the decision to go back, and just as I saw these tourists on the lake, determined to take their holiday shot for the gram.... the clouds ripped open for a moment, and the lowering sun blazed through.... lit everything in a blazing pink haze reflecting off everything as the salt crystals that were rapidly being exposed in the spraying water reflected the light everywhere....
... and then, all over again... in like 2 minutes... I managed a few shots, and that's all....
I wish I had a video to show how strong and crazy that moment truly was, "
(Excerpt from my travel journal)
.
It was a true crazy moment, once in a lifetime and never to be repeated.
@lee_yuxuan_ and I were on our way back to the car... I fumbled my camera to get it turned on and barely had time to fiddle the settings and take a few shots before.... the sun was gone, the colour leached out of the salt and there were just muted tones of grey and white... taken in Lake Tyrrell by @k.port.7

~ Vlad and Louie
.
There's something that is constantly being debated and discussed when it comes to photography... if your photos hold more "information" or if your photos portray more "emotion"
.
It's that fine line that we as photographers walk when taking/ editing/ viewing a photo... what is the photo about? What does this photo mean? Why was this photo taken?.... Is this a good photo?
.
There's a million different names or categories people file photos under in order to explain them.. being Documentay/ Journalist, street photography, landscape, portrait, editorial, high art.... honestly, the list of names is huge, and seemingly new ones are added to all the time...
.
But boiling it all right down... what does this photo make me feel? It'd be a good question to answer.. and the point of view of the "viewer" will always be different... for example, these photos, it was a fun day with Vlad and his pup Louie... and for Vlad and his family, they would feel more emotion viewing this photo because of little Louie... strangers, who have no connection to them, may view the information... a man and his dog, rule of thirds, diffused lighting, using the available framing, etc....
.
Whatever the intention of the photographer... the photo or indeed any artwork is judged, valued, etc. by the viewer... and the value will change depending on the viewer.

~ ... we all leave our mark...
.
"It's interesting how absolutely everything and everyone leaves a mark in history... some obvious, like the red square screaming the Dutch occupation in this part of Malaysia, the church ruins above... or just smaller... subtle changes... like that one small wild rose in a street filled with tropical plants... or that japanes salt plum added to my juice at that bar... some subtle small changes that originated elsewhere... that influence the now... and the future. "
(Excerpt from my travel journal)
.
Ok... I wrote the above after we had had a drink or two, and I was feeling a little dizzy... and a little too philosophical, hahahaa.
.
But it is fascinating, going back and trying to find the root cause of something... what sparked change... that can be as obvious as a painting, a building, a cuisine... but then uncovering the etymology of speech... or of a culture.... or deeper still... where do my likes and wants originate from? My own reactions?
.

~ .... [ framing ] ....
.
" 'From high up.. It's like everything is so far away.... work, people, problems, worries...' and there was a silence that followed.
Both of us, still looking out the window, I don't think we actually saw the view.
And then... a small voice from behind us 'and everything you care about too... It's interesting.'
.... the voice got closer... right at our ear now,'how a change of location, a small change in the angle of your head... and the whole world changes'
Silence.... and then... the sound of that same voice retreating.... 'There's a big difference, you looking up, and you looking down... especially if you don't have the choice'
Silence, as the door closed softly. "
(Excerpt from my writing)
.
Looking back over some of the photos from that old shoot with Jordan and Yu Xuan... hunting light traps in one of my favourite buildings here.
.
This place changes depending on the time of day, weather, and the crowds.
It's not always just the exhibits, but the building itself is amazing. I've explored it many times, and there's always something new.
.
Never realised how much I missed exploring while all the lockdowns and working from home... I really want to start getting out there more. taken in Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia by @k.port.7

~ ... the mood of nature
.
" 'Who would have thought 5 minutes ago was blazing sunshine!'.. and Yu Xuan was laughing at me.
We had gotten through the gate in blazing sunshine where the workers were trying to sell us some outdoor plants they had excess of (but we only have a small balcony mostly in shade) and we went down the path and boom! Rain... soft as cobwebs falling, and the water gathering on leaves... we stepped into the shadow of some trees where I shot the deep reds of a Japanese maple tree drew little crystal beads of water"
(Excerpt from my travel journal)
.
I've always liked the Japanese maple tree... this one, the Crimson Queen is a bit of a favourite because the leves are so delicate and gentle.
.
This whole garden was outstanding... moving through it from an Italian style lawn garden with statues to an English style grove of bluebells, to a Japanese garden with a pond and a path that led down to a mass of ferns along the waterway!
.
You would have not guessed this was November 2022! The weather was not at all like late spring... I would love to get up to Mount Macedon again and explore this place a little more... and it's relatively closer to us than I originally thought! taken in Forest Glade Gardens by @k.port.7
