“I want to use words like ventral and dorsal, recto and verso, but I am overwhelmed by the feeling that I am seeing all sides at once, and in that abundance each edge is a fold. I am reminded that a map is not just an image but a piece of the very world that it represents. It is not so much that this painting resists being named by naming so many other things in its formation, but that its mutations continuously swallow what they begin to resemble.“

—Painter @louisblock wrote this about a different work by Kern Samuel for @brooklynrail’s Dec/Jan 2023-24 issue. How gorgeously it describes the artist’s work here too, making window light dance.

“Building” names both object and action. Bringing together Jamie Nares and Samuel Kern, BUILDING emerges from this doubling, channeling the material constitution of the city itself as something continually made and remade.

The paintings, objects, and films on view—most made over the past decade—echo rusted surfaces and glinting fixtures, mottled sidewalks and elaborate scaffolding. Though primarily non-representational, these works retain the visible seams and indelible traces of human contact, physical labor, and material transformation.

The exhibition is titled after Nares’s 64-minute film, Building (2020), which quietly observes the construction of a highrise condo from the artist’s 25th-floor window until it exceeds the frame, recasting abstraction as a negotiation of perspective relative to scale.

Faculty Spotlight! Meet Kern Samuel, a Trinidadian-born artist who received his BFA from The Cooper Union and MFA from the Yale School of Art. Samuel is newly a Full-Time Lecturer in Painting here at Boston University.

Biography, provided by Derosia:

“Kern Samuel’s practice centers on painting as a modality to explore material, labor, and the implications thereof. Such tactile engagements as sewing, quilting, dying, folding, and embroidery generate Samuel’s compositions, which often evoke infographic, diagrammatic modes of dissemination. Language, when included in Samuel’s works, is mediated through the grid of the quilt, subverting a didactic reading and lending the verbal a visual dimension. Text and representation are employed sparingly and in conceptual rhyming with material support, alluding to the everyday applications and intimate associations of a given substrate. Such tactics facilitate open readings, circumventing traditional critical models by privileging visuality and tactility over vocabulary. The generosity and expansiveness of this gesture is underscored by Samuel’s evocative titles referring to memory, the unconscious, and spirituality—the territories in which language is inefficient.”

Kern Samuel (b. 1990, Mount Hope, Trinidad and Tobago) is an artist living and working on the East Coast. He received his BFA from Cooper Union and his MFA from the Yale School of Art. His practice explores the expanded language of painting through sewing, dyeing, collage, and drawing. Leaning toward abstraction and text, his work engages the symbolic and subjective dimensions of aesthetic experience, often grounded in personal and everyday materials. Recent solo and institutional exhibitions include Paining (Derosia, New York, 2023), Hard Ground (MoMA PS1, New York, 2024), Rough Draft (Soft Opening, London, 2025), and Bonner Kunstverein (Bonn, Germany, 2022). by @k01123s
