First time on a plane… but definitely not the last ✈️🔥We also salute the work @aswad_thomas continues to do as the current Vice President of the Alliance for Safety and Justice (ASJ), the National Director of ASJ’s flagship project, Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice (CSSJ), and the author of the upcoming memoir Healing Through Adversity: A Journey Through Basketball, Violence, and Forgiveness. As an African American male and a surviving victim of gun violence, Aswad is well aware of the impacts of trauma and loss that many, in communities across the country have experienced and continue to live with. Aswad has helped pass dozens of laws to reduce incarceration and increase access to victim services, including expanding Trauma Recovery Centers across the country. In 2024, the Office of Victims of Crime awarded Aswad the Survivor Voices Award and he led the historic Crime Survivors Speak March in Washington, D.C. Aswad’s story has been featured in the New York Times, Time Magazine, The Hill, New Yorker Magazine, NBC LX, NBC Nightly News, Huff Post, Chicago Tribune, PBS, Yahoo News, The Trace, Detroit Free Press, Hartford Courant, The Guardian, VICE, The Marshall Project, C-Span, and dozens of other media outlets. He was recently featured as still one of The Root’s 100 most influential African Americans after initially being recognized as the 13th most influential African American in the world. 🫡 We’re extremely grateful for those who invest in the next generation.
