#TheDIESELProjectChange starts when a few people refuse to accept, “this is just how things are.”We’re definitely some of those people. 🙋🏼‍♀️@k9kismet : What if shelter dogs had access to professional training? What if volunteers had the chance to learn and grow alongside them?The idea was ambitious. Impossible, some told us. But it was a dream worth fighting for… and eventually we got the chance to present it to the right person.(Looking at you @docmelwags 🫶🏼)Today, the DIESEL Project is 22 LBACS volunteers strong.22 humans showing up week after week to learn more about canine behavior, leash handling, nervous system regulation, and how to help shelter dogs feel safer, calmer, and more understood in a world that can feel loud and scary.Yesterday, 14 of those volunteers grabbed an adoptable shelter dog and joined 4 amazing trainers for a team pack walk.Shelter dogs walking calmly through the world beside people who believe in them. Dogs practicing new skills, building confidence, and getting the chance to be seen outside the kennel walls not as “shelter dogs”… but as companions worthy of patience, guidance, and understanding.✨️ It was magical. ✨️Thank you to @robertvillaneda for believing in this dream and helping us turn it into something real. Thank you to @jojo_dog_psychology @mr.johnflores @trainingwithcait and every volunteer who continues showing up week after week for these dogs. A path home. 💖The DIESEL Project pairs @lbanimalcare long-stay shelter dogs with professional trainers who take the time to truly understand them. Each dog receives a thoughtful evaluation and a personalized board and train plan designed to help them build skills and replace stress-driven behaviors with healthier ones.In simple terms, it gives overwhelmed shelter dogs the chance to rest, reset, and remember what it feels like to be a joyful companion again.Think of it as shelter dog rehab, with a future family on the horizon.This program was born from a few difficult truths. Even the best dogs can begin to unravel under the chronic stress of shelter life. Shelters can only do so much with limited resources. And there simply aren’t enough fosters to guide every dog through traditional rescue pathways.We know we can’t change the system overnight. But we can rethink the part we play in it and try something new.Research shows that even a short break from the shelter can lower a dog’s cortisol levels and help calm their nervous system. Pair that reset with thoughtful professional training and the chance to share their story with potential adopters, and it can change a dog’s future.Of course, we hope every dog finds their home before training ends. But if not, their support system doesn’t disappear.They return to the shelter with a behavioral assessment that helps staff and adopters better understand the kind of home where they will thrive. A trained team of volunteer handlers continues working with them, providing consistency, support, and encouragement. Together, rescue, shelter staff, volunteers, and community members keep sharing their stories until they find their way home.Shelter dogs deserve the chance to be understood. The chance to heal, to learn, and to thrive. Most of all, they deserve the chance to be loved. Pittie Pool Party! 💦The guest list?@lbanimalcare adoptable cuties:🐾 Tallulah A755826🐾 Buttons A753997🐾 Rocky A727531And yes... every single one of them is looking for a forever home. 🏡❤️Thanks to the amazing folks at @friendsoflongbeachanimals (FOLBA), eight LBACS dogs got the chance to enjoy a four-week shelter break with trainer @robertvillaneda... and as you can see, they definitely made the most of it.With financial support from FOLBA, these long-stay shelter dogs were able to step away from their kennels during the busy July stray season (thanks, fireworks 🫣), helping free up much-needed kennel space for incoming strays while also giving them a chance to decompress, learn new skills, and spend some time just being dogs.They've been practicing leash manners, splashing in kiddie pools, swimming, exploring new places, working on their basic manners, playing with toys, and some have even made a few new dog friends along the way.Most importantly, this break has given them the opportunity to show us who they are outside the chaos of a shelter environment.Buttons heads back to the shelter tomorrow, while Tallulah and Rocky return on the 30th. 📢 Adopter wanted.Someone out there is about to get a really good dog.Buttons has friends in all sizes. Big dogs. Little dogs. Medium dogs. Basically, if you've got four paws, she'd probably like to say hello. She even shared a kennel with a male husky at the shelter.She's heading back to @lbanimalcare on Saturday, and we'd really love to see a line of people waiting to meet her when the shelter opens on Sunday.Young? ✔️ Goofy? ✔️ Sweet? ✔️Always up for an adventure? ✔️✔️She loves toys, loves the water, and even got to do a little swimming while hanging out with @robertvillaneda. She's done well with dogs of all sizes after proper introductions and has never met a day she didn't think could be a little more fun.Her time away from the shelter only confirmed what we already knew: Buttons is ready for a home. She's a young, healthy, playful girl who will thrive with a family that's excited to continue helping her learn and explore the world.The truth is, dogs like Buttons don't do well in a shelter. She's active, curious, and wants to be out doing things. Going for walks. Playing. Having fun. Shelter break loading... Mr. Worldwide and Malachite are officially ready for the next episode.Thanks to the amazing folks at @friendsoflongbeachanimals (FOLBA), eight @lbanimalcare (LBACS) dogs had the chance to take a break from the shelter this month. The goal was twofold: create space for the influx of stray dogs the shelter typically sees during July while giving some long-stay dogs the opportunity to temporarily step away from the shelter, decompress, reset, and learn new skills with trainer @robertvillaneda.@k9kismet has been helping coordinate the program and is honored to share these dogs' journeys along the way because every story told is another chance for a dog to be seen.The dogs headed to Robert's in shifts. As the first group prepares to return to the shelter to continue their search for forever homes there, Mr. Worldwide and Malachite are going to begin their own shelter break. Time to decompress. Time to learn.For Mr. Worldwide, that means slowing things down, building impulse control, and learning healthy ways to channel all that enthusiasm. For Malachite, it's about building confidence and helping him feel more comfortable navigating the world around him.For both dogs, this is a chance to learn more about who they are outside the shelter environment so everyone can better understand their needs, continue building on their strengths, and help them find the right forever homes.Thank you to FOLBA for making opportunities like this possible, to LBACS for being open-minded and willing to try new approaches, and to Robert for continuing to invest his time, talent, and heart into helping dogs who need him most.Shelter dogs deserve homes, and programs like this deserve an audience. Monday cliffhanger:Ball in the pool.Rocky on the edge.What happens next?(Swipe left)At the shelter, Rocky was getting lost in a sea of full kennels. With so many deserving dogs waiting, this hunky fella had a hard time catching the eye of potential adopters.Thanks to the amazing folks at @friendsoflongbeachanimals, Rocky got the chance to enjoy a shelter break with trainer @robertvillaneda... and WOW, has he made the most of it.Outside the shelter, Rocky's head-turning smile lights up like someone flipped a switch. The stress just melted away, and the sweet, fun, affectionate dog underneath finally got to shine. The shelter estimates Rocky to be around 7 years old, which technically makes him a senior... but someone clearly forgot to tell him that.Rocky is proving himself to be a wonderfully well-balanced guy. Smart, engaged, affectionate, eager to learn, and happiest when he's hanging out with people. He's polishing up his leash manners and is determined to become everyone's favorite walking buddy in no time.Now Rocky just needs someone to take the plunge... and make it official. Adopt him.
