Last year our Coding tutor François Girard Meunier decided to team up with Rudy Guedj to enter the European Central Bank’s contest for the upcoming redesign of the EURO bank notes.

They made it through the tough selection process (1,241 candidates, 39 proposals) and were officially announced as one of the 10 finalists. Their design, Proposal D, is now part of a public survey running until September 21, ahead of the final decision at the end of the year.

It was a great challenge with a very precise brief. For their proposal they focused on one of the two given themes, “Rivers and birds”

“Six birds appear within abstracted landscapes, connected by the continuous journey of a river, from a mountain source to a stormy sea. Light accompanies this progression, evolving from a soft presence into a dynamic, incisive force with symbolic resonance. The scenes invite close inspection, placing the viewer in the position of a birdwatcher, gathering traces of each species. On the reverse, EU institutions are expressed through human gestures and a morphing fabric-like mesh. Hands hold, stabilize, align and debate, suggesting cooperation in action, while light radiates from each building across the EU territory.”

It’s a great achievement to see François among the ten finalists selected for the new euro banknotes, as part of one of only two Netherlands-based teams. We are proud to have such a versatile designer and tutor inspiring our graphic design students.

Excursion Venice Year 1 2026

On September 25, 41 new first year students embarked on an intriguing journey to Venice to visit the Biennial in Minor Keys. The Biennial was in the news already for months because of protests, boycotting and of course due to the tragic death of the second African-born curator Koyo Kouoh.

After a long bustrip, we arrived in the beautiful hostel in the middle of Venice and received a guided tour by #maartencornel on the San Marco Square.
After a short introduction to the Giardini our first venue, we all scattered towards the many pavilions and performances. Students were plunged into the deep in intensive performances, interactive installations and tried to figure out if “their country” was represented in a way they thought was appropriate, the small conversations and sharing food were ways to process so much artistic input.
The spirit of Koyo Kouoh was indeed very visible. Surrounded by the work and home of painters like Titiaan & Tintoretto and so many contemporary artists the trip brought a shared context in design and art for all our new students. We are very sad to hear about the passing away of our former tutor Mitch Paone. Mitch contributed to our program in workshops and as a Graphic Design tutor. His specialties concerning kinetic type design were very much appreciated by our students, they loved his classes. We will miss his laugh, music and positive attitude towards life. We wish his partner and family strength in these difficult times. There will be space in the near future for condolences and shared memories. Thank you Mitch and RIP 🤍.#mitchpaone by @kabkdesign

Please come to ‘Tomorrow Tomorrow’, the Graphic Design Graduation Show 2026, that comprises works by 40 graduating students. This year, our inquiry was to make a collective exhibition, through organising workshops, readings and events around our graduation process. In the exhibition, our works are supported by collectively built wooden structures, translated into the visual language and curation of the show.

The show is open from 2 till 7 July, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., at Prinsessegracht 4, Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. Our department is located on the second floor in the KABK building, and some works are on display in BC.108, BC.106, and BC.102.

From the darkness of a containership, the Dutch landscape has been introduced to an intruder—showing up in news and cctv footage or shooting by, known for its unmistaken presence. Hailed by some and despised by others, it challenges the traditions of the landscape, triggering strong emotions and debates, deviding the nation in two. The intruder becomes a myth, symbol, an ugly duckling, something to despise.⁠
