early wednesday morning, we very suddenly had to say goodbye to my best friend. everyone who had the fortune of meeting G knew that there was no dog on the planet like him. he was a light in the world, goofy, sweet, full of attitude, and far too smart for his own good. even as his age caught up to him and his personality reflected that of the grumpy old man he was, the one thing that never changed was how connected we were. from the second I took him home, we were bonded. it was him and me and no one else mattered. he was my tiny shadow and more than anything, I will miss living life with my best friend by my side. i love you so much my little man. i’ll miss you forever. by @kadyspence

almost three years ago, i visited south dakota for the first time. it was supposed to be a means to an end, a necessary evil on the way to bigger and better things, but i completely fell in love with the state. the black hills is sacred land, and one of the most jaw-droppingly beautiful places in this country. i cannot wait to go back.

while i was there, i took part in an “american rite of passage” by visiting mount rushmore. i didn’t know at the time the immense hurt this monument — carved by a KKK sympathizer — causes for the Lakota & other indigenous people all over this country. Nick Tilsen of the @ndncollective said “it’s an injustice to actively steal indigenous people’s land, then carve the white faces of the colonizers who committed genocide.”

i’m embarrassed that i didn’t think more critically about this when i visited. native culture is everywhere in south dakota; it’s what makes the area so unique and special. i’m embarrassed that our evil, horrific president used this sacred land to peddle more lies in the wake of his mishandling of a pandemic that’s caused the preventable deaths of 130,000 americans, in the wake of one of biggest civil rights movements of our generation.

it’s been FOUR YEARS since i drove down to richmond and picked up this goon in a cracker barrel parking lot. is he aging gracefully? no! is he sick of my shit? absolutely! does anyone even know how old he actually is? who’s to say! but at a time when most birthdays are sad, i’m happy I can celebrate my little man by being quarantined with him and bothering him as much as he bothers me. happy gotcha day gagne!!! it’s been absolutely amazing watching you grow from a scared, quiet rescue into this bold, dramatic old man. I love you so much it physically hurts us both ♥️♥️♥️
