Some thoughts on growing up with two cultures ⭐️

Having family in a different country means I can only see them about once or twice a year. And while there are definitely some struggles connected to that I am so happy to be able to learn from two cultures and navigate life in two languages.

📝Figuring it out - Ep.1

Solo Travel makes you realise: you are more capable than you thought.

Before I went on my first ever solo trip I was terrified! I had all these worries in my head and I even called my mom to tell her that I won’t do it. My mom being the chill person she is, told me to get my sh*t together, to book the flight and if something would go wrong she would fly out to visit me. Secretly I think she hoped I would need some help so that she could‘ve joined me on my trip haha.
I am so glad I took the leap and trusted that everything will go alright. Because only when you are alone on the other side of the world you realise how much you can actually handle. From being sick in the hostelroom ( which is still an absolute nightmare) to having tourguides cancel on you last minute, you learn to take care of yourself and trust your intuition. And like everything in life, once you have actually done the thing you realise it wasn’t as scary as you’d thought it would be!

Mexico was the first stop on my open end trip to Latin America and I couldn’t have wished for a better introduction to all the chaos that was about to follow.

Arriving in CDMX meant adjusting not only to the time difference but also the altitude. Not sure how well I handled it all because I slept ALOT during my first week but after a while my body finally got used to the sudden changes and the adventure could begin.

I spent a total of 2 months in Mexico and I still only saw a fracture of it. Call me ignorant but I had no idea how big this country actually is. Which also meant I had to quickly throw my initial fear of nightbuses in Latin America (because every country is oh so dangerous) out of the window and get as comfy as you can get with limited leg room. What I learned is that bus seats in Mexico decline so much that the person in front of you is basically laying on your lap. Which could‘ve been a sweet meet-cute if all the men in front of me weren’t old tios.

What Mexico lacked in cute men on my buses it made up for with cute men on the streets. Let’s just say after a whole year of not going on a single date I found the joy in answering awkward small talk questions while being taken to local bars that I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise, again.

My absolute favourite place was San Cristóbal de las Casas. As a mountain girly and small town lover it hit all the right marks to become a place I can see myself going back to over and over again.

But for now I just have to relive my memories of Mexico while scrolling through my camera roll and missing those hundreds of tacos that kept my spendings low and and my mood high.

This waterfall hike was one of my favourite things I did in El Salvador!

The 7 waterfall hike is exactly what it sounds like. You hike and get to see 7 whaterfalls. But WOW!
I didn’t really know what to expect but each waterfall was cooler than the one before.
My favourite ( and scariest) part was when we had to climb one of the waterfalls to reach the next ones. Once I ignored the fact that there was absolutely nothing saving me from slipping and falling to my death, it was actually so much fun!

If you want to do this hike as well you can text Alex! ( @tribu_.trips )

A must do hike when you are in El Salvador.

I didn’t expect much when I went on this hike but the views have absolutely blown me away!
What better way to start the day then by cooling down under a waterfall?

A day in my life staying for free in El Salvador!

For this volunteer I stayed at Ricks hostel in Juayúa and painted some murals. It was my first time painting murals so I was a bit stressed at the beginning but I think it turned out quite alright:) Luckily I was able to decide when I wanted to work which gave me the opportunity to check out one of the many waterfalls that are in the area. It was absolutely magical!
I started painting by 2pm and was done at 7pm which gave me enough time to eat some dinner and then head to the local bar to meet my friends. Successful day if you ask me :)
If you are in Juayúa and looking for a tourguide to show you around you can send my friend Alex a message ( @tribu_.trips ). I promise you, you will have a great time!

Volunteering while travelling is a great way to save some money but it’s not the only reason why I love doing it.
It also gives me the opportunity to slow down, get to know a place better and to connect with the people. In this case my 2 week long volunteer turned into almost 1.5 months in Juayúa 😅 What can I say… I really loved that place.

I use Worldpackers to find my volunteer positions and if you want to save some money on their membership you can use my code KAETHE

My mom came to visit me in Guatemala!

One thing about long term travel that I didn’t expect is how normal life on the road can start to feel.
Things I used to dream about suddenly become a random Tuesday. And sometimes it takes someone seeing them for the first time to make me realise how special they actually are.
Having my mom visit me in Guatemala reminded me to slow down, look around and not let the excitement of being somewhere new get lost in the routine of travelling.
Seeing her experience the joy of traveling, made me realise how special my life at the moment is and just because it has become part of my routine, I shouldn’t take it for granted. Because at the end of the day it is not normal life but a huge privilege!

Feeling very lucky to have a mom who not only came all this way to see me, but who also reminded me why I started travelling in the first place.
