As my thesis show comes to an end, I’ve been reflecting on my artistic journey throughout my entire MFA program @svamfaillustration . I am beyond grateful for the support, guidance, and encouragement I received from faculty, staff, my cohort, and my thesis advisors @timokamura @judithsolodkin . The transition from 2-D narrative illustration to a 3-D multisensory form of storytelling was not easy and definitely pushed me outside of my comfort zone, but I’m happy for the journey it took me through spiritually, emotionally, and artistically. Through garment construction and manipulation, textile sculptures, typography, printmaking, and material experimentation, I found a new medium in which I can communicate ideas and perspectives that people not only witness but can physically engage with.

What I concluded from For The Love Of God: Act II, is that love truly does heal all things. Love those who love you and love those who don’t. Personal transformation, social reform, and divine love go hand in hand. Basing this project around the personhood of Jesus and his encounters with people rather than just scenes and scripture helped me really understand and express what it means to love your neighbor, especially within today’s social and political climate. As my project went through changes and breakthroughs, so did my faith and I believe those processes aided each other. This lays the foundation with how I advocate for, interact with, and amplify the stories of marginalized people around the world.

Thank you to everyone who came to the reception and gallery walkthrough. Your presence and support was overly appreciated and your love was felt dearly. I am grateful for the experience I had with each of you and am excited to take you guys with me into the next chapter in my life and artistic career! Thank you.♥️ by @kai.gloo

Join me Monday May 11th from 5-8PM at the SVA Chelsea Gallery for the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Thesis Show. There I will be presenting ACT II of my FOR THE LOVE OF GOD series where recycled fabrics, patchwork, typography, printmaking, millinery, and garment manipulation, transcends the form of 2D illustration into 3D wearable sculpture.
⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ For the Love of God: Act II interprets the personhood of Jesus as the Word made flesh and examines how divine love moves from internal transformation to structural reform. It is expressed intrinsically through grace, liberation, and transformation, and extrinsically through justice, restoration, and communal repair. Through biblical encounters with the marginalized, lepers, Samaritans, themes of loving thy neighbor as thyself transcend time to people experiencing homelessness, discrimination, and exploitation.
⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ This thesis repositions Christ not as partisan figure but as the author of truth and justice beyond political alignment. His touch dismantled stigma. His words broke boundaries. His presence demanded restitution. Using garment construction as a theological and social metaphor, the collection interrogates occupation and taking up space within contemporary contexts of homelessness, bondage, and casteism. taken in SVA Chelsea Gallery by @kai.gloo

A sneak peak into the expansion of my art practice from narrative illustration to garment development. Showcasing the conception of For The Love Of God Act II, specifically the design process behind “The Lazarus Jacket and Timb Coat”. Inviting patchwork, up cycling, and laser cutting as a means of storytelling parallel to biblical themes of transformation and repair.

“K’alani Abron in Hibernation” 16in x 20in

Last fall I started a series serving as both a remembrance and a reclamation, honoring the lives of 6 missing girls while illuminating the transformative power of communal sorrowing. I didn’t want to just dwell in the grief of their disappearence but to transmute loss into something radiant, an assertion that these girls are more than statistics—they are spirits woven into memory, demanding to be seen, remembered, and uplifted beyond the silence that sought to erase them. They hold power that supersedes the realms of nature and transforms the supernatural. Through these transformations, these girls take control, therefore raising their value and the price society deemed for them.

K’alani’s portrait is an ode to rest as rebellion. She appears mid-hibernation, surrounded by the icy wreckage of an avalanche and the quiet promise of rebirth. Her face, serene and untouched, becomes a monument the dormant yet deliberate power of ice—a force that silences with weight, blankets with beauty, and holds within it the tension of eventual release. . This is not absence. It is incubation. K’alani’s hibernation is an assertion of control, a reclamation of time and space in a world that tried to rush her to ruin.

“The Chase” 68in x 44in

Matthew 13:57 - A Prophet Is Not Without Honor Except In His Own Town And In His Own Home

This is the fourth of a 15 piece collection of artwork depicting a modern day gospel portraying the life of Jesus Christ from his birth to his resurrection. Each piece is a scene from his journey showcasing his power juxtaposed to his normalcy. This creates a dynamic that the viewer can glorify yet relate to. This portrayal of Jesus ties directly to scripture and helps translate the stories from our past into our present.

Taking place in New York City, each piece is followed by a verse hidden within street signs,
billboards, fashion, and other signature staples of New York culture.

Jesus travels the city healing, ministering, and futfiling prophecy as the Son of God, accompanied by his followers where he’s facing adversity every step of the way.

This piece specifically alludes to the moment when Jesus was chased out of his hometown, Nazareth, by the townspeople. The people of Nazareth greeted Jesus with skepticism and outrage. Nazareth was a marginalized town with a bad reputation—nothing good was expected to come from it. The people could understand that others might be empowered by God to perform such works, but to them, Jesus was just Mary’s son. He grew up down the street; they knew him as only a carpenter. While today we value the opportunity to achieve, advance, and create a new way in the world, the people of Jesus’ day were defined by their families and upbringing. Jesus did not come from a line of teachers or preachers; he was not a scribe or a priest. And so, the people took offense at what he was doing and who he claimed to be. When you’ve been stereotyped, put down, disregarded, discriminated against, and dehumanized, it’s hard to see anything good coming from you; it’s easy to feel like nothing good can. The people of Nazareth felt entitled to define Jesus according to their terms of existence and social strata. They saw themselves in Jesus and couldn’t see the greatness within him—or within themselves.
