The figures seem to meet your gaze, as if demanding truth from every visitors soul who enters. Every corner captures the eye with astonishing detail, drawing you deeper into the story carved into stone, wood, and gold. Above, the magnificent ceiling fresco opens like a vision of heaven itself, while noble materials and masterful craftsmanship speak of devotion beyond words.

As sunlight pours through the windows, it bathes the basilica in a glow that seems to reveal the holiness of the place. And then there is the altar... so radiant, so magnificent, that it feels less like a work of human hands and more like an earthly reflection of paradise itself.

I could say so much more, but the more my gaze wanders, the more I realize that no word would be enough.

Golden light spilled over the cobblestone streets of Strasbourg as they wandered without a map, guided only by laughter and the soft rhythm of their footsteps. Cafes, the canals of the Ill river, and old half-timbered houses passed by them. He stopped by the cathedral, brushing a strand of hair from her face, as if the world had paused just for them. The daily hustle and bustle around them faded to a whisper, the scent of fresh coffee and her fragrant perfume filled the air, their eyes locked, offering a glimpse deep into each other's souls. There they realized it; that they had not only found a beautiful place, but a home in each other.

Hidden within the splendour of the palace lies a room that feels almost enchanted. Delicate ceramics rest upon elegant wall consoles, mirrors multiply their beauty, and a ceiling adorned with lavish floral decoration completes this miniature world of Baroque elegance. Here, every detail invites the eye to linger a little longer.
.
.
.
A little, precious world lies in this cabinet of porcelain, flowers and dreams.
This is the Porcelain Cabinet in the Margrave’s Apartment at Rastatt Residential Palace. Its display of ceramics reflects the fascination with fine decorative objects that shaped aristocratic interiors in the eighteenth century. Porcelain and other refined ceramics were prized possessions, valued not only for their craftsmanship but also as symbols of wealth, taste and social standing.

The cabinet formed part of the margrave’s state apartment, where the arrangement of rooms reflected the strict hierarchy of court life. The splendour increased as visitors progressed through the suite, culminating in more intimate and exclusive spaces. Small cabinets could serve as places for private conversation and the appreciation of precious objects.

Mirrors amplify the display, while the floral ceiling decoration and intricate parquet floor turn the room itself into part of the spectacle.
More than a collection of beautiful objects, this little cabinet reveals the Baroque court’s love of refinement, rarity and carefully staged splendour.

A small room - an entire world of elegance.

Soft colours, intricate patterns and sumptuous tapestries transform scenes of battle into works of extraordinary beauty.
.
.
.
The beauty of Baroque. The brutality of war. When war becomes glory.

The tapestries displayed in the margrave’s antechamber and audience room belong to the Art of War series, produced by the van der Borght manufactory in Brussels. They depict military operations ranging from the transport of fascines for fortifications to ambushes and sieges.

These were not merely decorative objects. Their exceptional cost and prominent placement made them symbols of princely status, while their subject matter celebrated Ludwig Wilhelm as a successful military commander.

For the Baroque court, war was not only a source of suffering and destruction. Military victory could also represent courage, discipline, sacrifice and the defence of one's territory and faith. In the imagery of the palace, these achievements became part of the ruler's public identity.

Ludwig Wilhelm, remembered as the Türkenlouis, built his reputation through campaigns against the Ottoman Empire. Yet his own lands also suffered during the wars against France. Baden-Baden was devastated by French troops during the Nine Years’ War, giving the story of military glory a much harsher dimension.

But the contrast remains.

The tapestries celebrate the order and triumph of military achievement. They cannot show the full human cost beyond the scene: the wounded, the dead, the displaced and the families left behind.

Perhaps this is one of the great contradictions of Baroque court culture. War could be terrible in reality and magnificent in representation, its suffering transformed into an image of power, virtue and glory.

Two lives brought together by dynasty - and, unexpectedly, by affection.
.
.
.
.
A marriage of dynasty... and love.
When Ludwig Wilhelm travelled to Schlackenwerth in January 1690 to meet the daughters of the late Duke Julius Franz of Saxe-Lauenburg, the original expectation was that he might marry the elder sister, Anna Maria. Instead, his heart turned to the fifteen-year-old Sibylla Augusta. They became engaged only four days after his arrival and married on 27 March 1690.

For a long time, their courtship was described simply as a dynastic arrangement. Recent discoveries, however, have revealed a more personal side to their relationship. In a letter dated 9 February 1690, Sibylla Augusta wrote of Ludwig Wilhelm's affection and described herself as the happiest person on earth. She eagerly awaited his return and signed herself his faithful princess.

Ludwig Wilhelm's military career had already made him famous across the Empire. His victory at Slankamen in 1691 earned him the name “Türkenlouis”, and he became celebrated as a defender of Christianity and one of the emperor's most distinguished commanders.
Sibylla Augusta, meanwhile, was far more than the wife of a famous soldier.

When Ludwig Wilhelm died in 1707, she assumed the regency for their young son and governed Baden-Baden for two decades. She helped rebuild a territory devastated by war and became a decisive patron of Rastatt's architecture and artistic life.

The palace they created together therefore carries something of both of them: Ludwig Wilhelm's ambition, military glory and princely self-image, and Sibylla Augusta's determination, taste and enduring influence.

A marriage born from dynastic politics.
A partnership shaped by affection.
And a legacy that is still visible.

Above the portraits of princes and ancestors, the ceiling opens into another world, a realm of gods, heroes and immortality.

Jupiter rises above the scene as Ludwig Wilhelm, the Hercules, is welcomed into the heavens. Around them, the painted architecture dissolves the boundaries between the earthly hall and the divine realm.
.
.
.
.
When mythology becomes political language.

The great ceiling fresco of the Ahnensaal was painted by Giuseppe Roli in 1704. At its centre, Hercules is received by Jupiter into the realm of the gods, achieving immortality.

For the Baroque court, this was far more than decoration. Hercules embodied strength, courage and triumph over adversity, a powerful allegory for Ludwig Wilhelm's achievements.
Just as Hercules had liberated the world from evil, Ludwig Wilhelm was presented as a heroic defender of Christianity. The State Palaces and Gardens call this a “typical form of Baroque glorification”, understood by contemporary viewers.

Jupiter grants Hercules divine recognition, elevating the hero beyond ordinary human achievement.

And so the message becomes unmistakable:
Ludwig Wilhelm was not merely a prince or military commander. He was presented as a hero worthy of the heavens.

History becomes legend.
The ruler becomes hero.
And the palace becomes his stage.

Around this divine elevation, four allegories complete the message. The oval medallions show Magnanimitas, Nobilitas, Auctoritas and Gloria Principis, greatness of spirit, noble lineage, authority and princely glory.

In the Baroque imagination, virtue was given a face and a place within the architecture, surrounding the ruler with the qualities he was expected to embody.

To stand beneath the gaze of the ancestors is to feel the weight of generations.

Portrait after portrait, the walls seem to draw the past into the present. Princes and princesses, fathers and mothers, generations of noble houses. All gathered beneath one magnificent ceiling.

You look upon them.

And yet, for a moment, it feels as though they are looking back.

The splendour of the Ahnensaal is not merely ornamental. It is imposing, solemn and almost theatrical: a room in which lineage becomes presence, and history becomes something you can stand before.

The doors open onto a world of painted ceilings, gilded ornament and solemn portraits. A place where generations seem to remain present, watching from the walls as you cross the threshold.

Every detail speaks of a world in which lineage was not merely remembered, but displayed.
For a moment, the hall feels less like a room and more like a stage on which an entire dynasty has been gathered.
.
.
.
.
A hall built to remember.
The Ancestral Hall (Ahnensaal) was created as one of the great ceremonial rooms of Rastatt and served as a gallery of the princely family's ancestors. Its decoration transformed genealogy into something tangible: the lineage surrounding the court became part of the architecture itself.
Among the portraits is Julius Franz of Saxe-Lauenburg, father of Sibylla Augusta, who would become Ludwig Wilhelm's wife and after his early death the person who completed the palace of rastatt. His presence connects the hall not only to Ludwig Wilhelm's own family, but also to the Ascanian dynasty into which Sibylla Augusta was born.

The portraits were more than private family memories. In the ceremonial world of the Baroque court, ancestry conveyed legitimacy, continuity and status. Surrounded by their predecessors, the living rulers were presented as part of a lineage stretching back through generations.

Above them, mythology and allegory complete the message. Gods, heroes and symbolic figures inhabit the painted decoration, turning the room into a visual language of power, ancestry and princely virtue.

Here, history was not simply recorded.
It was given a place on the walls to be celebrated.

To climb these stairs is to enter a world where architecture becomes theatre.

With every step, splendour unfolds above and around you, figures frozen in motion, a painted sky opening overhead, heraldry and golden light turning the ascent into something far greater than a passage from one floor to another.

For a moment, you are not merely entering a palace, you are entering a world of miracles
.
.
.
A staircase made for representation.

At Rastatt, the grand staircases were far more than functional passages. They formed part of the ceremonial route by which distinguished guests entered the princely apartments. The glorification of the master of the house began here, surrounding visitors with symbols of power, military achievement and classical mythology.

The ceiling fresco of the southern staircase depicts the Fall of Phaethon. The mythological story carries a political message: Phaethon loses control of the sun chariot, while Jupiter ultimately prevents catastrophe with his thunderbolt.

The imagery was not merely decorative. It formed part of a carefully conceived programme of princely representation. Phaëton's failure to control the power entrusted to him could serve as a cautionary image of the ruler who loses command - a striking contrast to the ideal of the responsible prince that Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden-Baden sought to embody.

Throughout the palace, mythology, architecture and decoration were woven together to glorify Ludwig Wilhelm as both prince and victorious commander. His military successes in the Ottoman wars earned him the name “Türkenlouis”, and his achievements appear repeatedly in the palace's imagery.
The staircase, therefore, was never simply a way upstairs.

It was the beginning of the spectacle.

A prince must build - not merely to erect a monument to himself, but to make the splendor of his realm visible for all time.

And with these words I welcome you to the palace of rastatt.

We will embark on a journey through this castle and explore its history as well as beauty. I am pleased to be able to present the Versailles of Baden to you and would like to start by thanking my companion who took the time and the palace administration: Staatliche Schlösser und Gärten Baden-Württemberg, Residenzschloss Rastatt. As you can see, the weather wasn't quite so good, so the gray of the sky should be a contrast to the rich red of the stone and even more so to what awaits you inside.
