Pushing limits beneath the surface
Precision. Control. Teamwork.
Technical DPV overhead training — where skill meets adventure. 💪 by @kai_noordijk

6 Days. 3 Divers. 1 Epic Cave training. 🦇

This summer, we had an awesome Cave 1 class with a very unique twist — a combined team of two CCR divers and one Open Circuit diver, all in sidemount configuration.

For six intense training days, we focused on teamwork, precision, and mastering every skill needed to safely explore the overhead environment. From drills to scenarios to problem-solving under pressure — these guys worked hard and absolutely delivered! 🙌

It was an incredible workshop to guide, and seeing their progress was just as rewarding as the final dives. Now, these three are ready for the next steps in their cave diving journey.

Squeezing through the narrow entrance at Marchepied is just the beginning.
Inside, the cave opens into a cold, unforgiving labyrinth where every fin kick and every breath counts. What starts as a dive quickly becomes a test of grit—of staying calm when the silt blinds you, when the ceiling presses in, and when your own mind becomes the biggest obstacle.
Here, students learn that cave diving isn’t just about skill, it’s about control. You claw your way to safety, not with strength, but with focus.
In Marchepied, composure is survival—and survival is earned. #CaveDiving #scuba #underwater by @kai_noordijk

🚀 Me and the boys after Googling 'how to
DPV in caves..'

---

DPVs (Diver Propulsion Vehicles) open up a whole new world of possibilities in overhead environments, but they also add layers of complexity that demand respect. Training is absolutely essential when scooters are combined with caves, mines, or wrecks. A DPV multiplies both your range and your potential problems: faster los of awareness, faster silt-outs, and the risk of getting much further from the exit than you realize.

During DPV overhead training, we focus on far more than just how to handle the scooter. It’s about maintaining perfect buoyancy and trim at speed, keeping strict situational awareness, and practicing emergency protocols until they become second nature. Lost gas, entanglements, and propulsion failures are all part of the scenarios we prepare for.

Communication and teamwork are key. Riding in formation, maintaining clear light signals, and having predetermined response plans ensure that a team functions as one unit even in zero visibility.

The DPV is a powerful tool, but in an overhead environment, it magnifies every mistake. With proper training, discipline, and respect for protocols, it becomes a safe way to explore further while still holding safety as the top priority. Adventure starts with preparation.

Big thanks to @floriansymoens for teaching us these skills

⚡ Nothing is as important as building a team when it comes to cave diving.
👉 Without a team there are no backup brains
👉 Without a team there is no crystal clear communication
👉 Without a team the hard earned memories are easily forgotten
💪 Train hard, dive easy!

🚀 Meanwhile me cruising with the boys half a kilometer under a mountain..
👉 DPV’s or Diver Propulsion Vehicles are used for traversing large distances underwater.
👉 Scootering in overhead environments requires serious training 💪
