It’s crazy to me how eating food with minimal ingredients—food our bodies have spent millions of years evolving with—is now seen as “dieting.”

Like… when did real food become the exception?

The fact that choosing something simple, whole, and unprocessed is met with eye rolls or judgment just shows how far we’ve strayed from what health actually is. How much marketing has warped our understanding.

And honestly… it’s sad and frustrating.
It makes people feel ashamed or “too much” for doing something that should be normal. Something that should feel good.

But more than anything, it just motivates me.
Because the more I see how backwards the narrative around health has become, only fuels my motivation to change it.

When people say they want to “balance their hormones,” they’re usually imagining a perfect, steady state — as if their hormones are meant to stay level all the time.
But that’s not how hormones work.
Hormones are chemical messengers released in response to your body’s internal environment. They fluctuate constantly — by the hour, the day, and across different life stages — to help you adapt to whatever your body needs.
🧠 Your brain (especially the hypothalamus and pituitary) is always monitoring things like stress, nutrients, light, and temperature — and then signaling your glands to adjust hormone levels accordingly.
📡 That’s why your cortisol spikes in the morning, your insulin rises after a meal, and your estrogen varies across your menstrual cycle. These are not imbalances — they are essential fluctuations.
💡 And what keeps hormones in check? Feedback loops. Most hormones operate on negative feedback systems — meaning when levels get high, your brain senses it and slows down production. It’s how your body self-regulates.
So no, your hormones don’t need to be “balanced” like a scale. They need to be supported — with sleep, nourishment, stress regulation, and, when necessary, medical care.
Because once you understand the physiology, you realize:
Hormones aren’t broken. They’re brilliant. by @kaience

Starting the week with some reminders about what health actually is.
Not trends. Not fear. Not pressure to be perfect.
There’s so much noise online—so many opinions, aesthetics, and “fixes” being sold as truth—that it’s easy to forget the basics.
Health isn’t about doing everything right.
It’s about understanding your body well enough to support it with consistency, not extremes.
These are a few sentences that helped me unlearn perfectionism, ignore the fear-mongering, and rebuild a more peaceful, empowered view of being healthy.
If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed or like you’re “doing it wrong,” I hope this brings you back to trust.
→ With your body.
→ With science.
→ With yourself.

Your gut lining isn’t just a barrier — it’s a living interface between your body and the outside world. Every molecule that enters your bloodstream must pass its inspection. When that lining weakens, your immune system gets pulled into constant defense mode, and chronic inflammation can quietly begin.

Your microbiome plays the role of maintenance crew and messenger. Those trillions of microbes aren’t passive passengers — they communicate directly with your immune and nervous systems through chemical signals, shaping everything from inflammation levels to hormone balance to mood regulation.

Short-chain fatty acids like butyrate aren’t just gut fuel — they’re molecular peacekeepers. They tighten your gut barrier, calm immune reactivity, and even influence how your brain and metabolism function. Without them, your gut wall loses its integrity and your immune system starts to overreact to harmless things.

And that’s the part that fascinates me most: your microbes are constantly negotiating peace between your body and the outside world. When we disturb that balance — through stress, poor diet, or chemical exposure — we’re not just upsetting digestion; we’re disrupting communication between organ systems.

So what questions does this bring up for you? What curiosities have sparked?

Most people hear “leaky gut” and think it’s just another wellness buzzword — but it’s actually a fascinating biological process.

Your gut lining isn’t just a tube that food passes through. It’s a living barrier made of a single layer of cells, sealed by tight junctions, protected by a mucus layer, and constantly fed by what your gut microbes make.

When that barrier breaks down — from chronic inflammation, stress, low fiber diets, or even certain medications — the gut becomes “leaky.” Not like holes in a pipe, but more like a weakened filter that lets bacterial fragments and toxins sneak into the bloodstream. That’s when the immune system gets involved, and inflammation can start spreading beyond the gut.

The key player that keeps this system strong? The gut microbiome. When you feed your microbes fiber, they ferment it into short-chain fatty acids like butyrate — which literally fuel the cells that keep your gut barrier healthy and sealed.

This video is a crash course — a foundation to start understanding how the gut works and why gut health matters far beyond digestion. There’s a whole world of biochemistry and physiology happening down there that we’re just scratching the surface of.

Cholesterol naturally tends to rise as we age. The liver becomes less efficient at clearing LDL, hormone levels like estrogen and testosterone drop (which normally help regulate cholesterol), and body composition shifts toward less muscle and more visceral fat. Add in chronic low-grade inflammation with age, and the balance tips toward higher LDL in the bloodstream.

One of the biggest myths about cancer is that it’s always caused by one thing—a food, a lifestyle choice, a single bad habit. The truth? Cancer is rarely that simple. It’s usually the result of years of chance, biology, and timing colliding in just the wrong way. That complexity is also what makes prevention, early detection, and treatment so challenging—but also so powerful.

Cancer research has given us some of the biggest discoveries in biology—like how cells know when to divide, how DNA repairs itself, and how our immune system recognizes danger. In many ways, cancer isn’t just a disease to treat—it’s a window into how life works when the rules break down.

Someone asks you “What is a hungover?”…. What do you tell them?? 😅
- Marinating in Regret, Your Bodys Payback, Just awful??

———
A hangover isn’t just “being dehydrated.” It’s your entire body trying to claw its way back to balance after alcohol hijacks multiple systems at once.
🧠 That pounding in your head? It’s partly from blood vessel changes and the rebound storm of neurotransmitters: when alcohol wears off, calming GABA plummets and excitatory glutamate rebounds → anxiety, restlessness, poor sleep (“hangxiety”).
⚡ Brain fog and zero brainpower? Your liver is so busy processing alcohol that glucose production slows, starving neurons of fuel. Pair that with lost electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium) from dehydration, and your nervous system can’t fire efficiently.
🔥 The body aches? Acetaldehyde—the toxic intermediate of alcohol metabolism—plus lactic acid buildup and inflammatory cytokines make you feel like you’ve been hit by a truck.
🤢 The nausea? Alcohol irritates the stomach lining, increases acid, and slows gastric emptying, leaving your GI tract in revolt.
In short: a hangover is your brain, liver, gut, and immune system all waving a white flag at once.

Most people think of “rest & digest” as just calming down after stress… but parasympathetic tone is bigger than that.
When your parasympathetic system is strong, your body isn’t just relaxed—it’s in repair mode:
🫀 Heart & vessels: Lower blood pressure and steadier heart rhythm = less wear-and-tear on your cardiovascular system.
🍽️ Digestion & absorption: Nutrients get broken down and absorbed more efficiently when your gut is under parasympathetic control.
💤 Recovery: Growth hormone and repair pathways (like protein synthesis) are more active when your body isn’t stuck in fight-or-flight.
🦠 Immune function: The vagus nerve actually dampens inflammation through the “cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway.”
🧠 Mental resilience: A strong parasympathetic tone makes it easier to shift out of stress—meaning you recover emotionally as well as physically.
Think of it this way: sympathetic mode helps you survive, parasympathetic tone helps you thrive.
And the best part? You can train it. Breathwork, gentle movement, time in nature, even humming or laughing—all send signals to the vagus nerve that say: “It’s safe to heal now.”

Your email inbox probably isn’t trying to kill you… but your body might think otherwise.
When your brain perceives a threat—whether it’s a bear, a break-up, or a backlog of unread messages—it triggers your sympathetic nervous system (the “fight or flight” branch). Heart rate rises, breathing quickens, digestion slows—all meant to help you survive danger.
But when modern “threats” are constant, your parasympathetic tone (the “rest and digest” branch) doesn’t get enough airtime. Low parasympathetic tone means your body spends more time in stress mode, which can affect digestion, recovery, immune function, and even mood.
The good news? You can train your parasympathetic tone like a muscle:
* * Breathe deeply (especially slow exhales)
* * Take real breaks—even 2–3 minutes counts
* * Get outside—nature cues safety to your brain
* * Move gently—walk, stretch, or do yoga
* * Practice gratitude—shifts brain focus away from threat
Think of it as teaching your nervous system that not every notification is a saber-toothed tiger.

Aqua de Pepino 🥒💧
This is a great-tasting way to hydrate on lighter days, but if you’re dripping sweat like you just got out of the shower… You’ll need more sodium than this gives.

Here’s the science behind why it works:
* Cucumber: 95% water + small amounts of potassium, magnesium, and antioxidants = hydration with extra micronutrients.
* Coconut water: The electrolyte base—rich in potassium, with magnesium, calcium, and a little sodium. Great for light hydration, but sodium is too low for post-sweat recovery.
* Sea salt (pinch ~⅛ tsp ≈ ~250 mg Na⁺): Adds the main sweat electrolyte. Sodium helps maintain plasma volume and pull water into circulation; with a touch of glucose, it’s absorbed even better.
* Aloe vera juice: Trace minerals + plant polysaccharides that can soothe an inflamed gut lining.
* Lime juice: Adds potassium, vitamin C, and flavor that makes you drink more.
* Honey (small amount): Glucose helps your body absorb sodium and water faster—too much, and it tips into a sugar spike.

What I love most about this recipe is that it’s all whole foods—no processed powders, no lab-made flavors. Whole foods give you not just water, but the micronutrients and plant compounds your body has evolved to use for fuel and recovery.

Thank you @revolveprimalhealth for the recipe and @isobelscheffey for sharing! I enjoyed every sip!
P.S. For heavy sweat sessions, aim ~500–1000 mg sodium per 500–750 mL.
