I recently watched Perfect Days by Wim Wenders for the first time, and it gave me the drive to finally paint something I had in mind since last summer, when I was hiking in Spain, often near or directly next to the highway.
In a dialogue in the film, the question comes up: Does a shadow get darker when it overlaps with another shadow? The conversation immediately shifts into trying it out but never arrives at a definite answer. And I just realized that this somehow draws a not-so-obvious, yet still present, connection to the painting I made right after watching the movie.
It’s a question that seems so naive, yet so profound. Even after painting a shadow over another shadow—or maybe not doing so after all.
So here is a painting of a bridge on which the shadow of another bridge is being cast. Quickly painted in a perhaps expressive color palette, without giving in to the longing to change too many little details afterward.

“Imagining Buchanan” is a sound installation at Haus am Waldsee, Berlin. Dec 12, 13 & 14. 11-6pm.

We explored the multiplicity, presence, and simultaneous invisibility of Black lived realities in Berlin, placing them in dialogue with the exhibition of Beverly Buchanan’s works at Haus am Waldsee.
The project brings together voices from several Afro-diasporic artists with an installation inspired by Buchanan’s sculptural practice and an accompanying publication.

Installation in collaboration with Juan Orozco.
