Rooted in rich West African traditions, this piece pairs ocean-toned, hand-formed recycled glass beads from Ghana with raw, hand-cast Ethiopian brass accent beads. Each glass bead carries a tactile, matte finish crafted through age-old Krobo techniques, anchored by the warm, sculptural weight of African metalwork. Designed and handcrafted with intentional simplicity. These beads are sourced directly from African artisans by @thebeadchest #african #ethnicjewellery #recycled #krobobeads by @kaioko.co

Crafted thread by thread in beeswax before being transformed into metal, these openwork brass beads carry centuries of West African heritage.
Hand-cast in Ghana using the ancient cire perdue (lost-wax) technique, each bead is completely unique. Artisans first hand-weave fine threads of softened beeswax around a central core to form these delicate, openwork cages. The wax is covered in clay, melted away over a furnace, and replaced with molten brass.
Because the clay mold must be broken to release the finished metal, no two beads are ever identical. Over time, the brass settles into a soft, velvety finish with hints of verdigris patina nestled in the grooves—a beautiful reminder of the hands, heat, and heritage behind slow, intentional craft.

There is magic in things that don’t try to be perfect.
At first glance, these handmade Buddha beads might seem rough around the edges. Their surfaces bear the uneven marks of human hands, no two shapes are identical. In a world obsessed with smooth lines and mass precision, they appear raw and unrefined.
But look a little closer, and that roughness reveals its true story.
Originating in mid-20th century Thailand, each bead features a hand-carved seated Buddha, shaped individually by an artisan rather than stamped out by a machine. Historically worn as talismans for protection and lucky charms, they were never meant to be delicate showpieces kept behind glass. They were made to be carried, held, and lived with.
The slight variations in size, the soft asymmetry, and the earthy texture aren’t flaws—they are proof of life. They remind us that true beauty rarely lives in flawless symmetry; it lives in the human touch, in intention, and in the strength of something crafted to ground and protect you.
Sometimes, the rough things in life are simply the ones holding the deepest soul. ✨ by @kaioko.co

This is why we call KAIŌKO “living jewellery.”
These African terracotta beads start thier journey raw, pale, dusty, and full of natural character. But the moment you bring a piece into your life, it begins to evolve with you.
As you wear your jewellery, the clay absorbs warmth and natural oils from your skin, gradually deepening in tone and developing a rich colour over time. No two pieces ever age the same way. These beads show that transformation in motion: pale earth shifting into warm, rich tones. It is not static, mass-produced metal—it is organic material that carries your story, changing as you move through life.
Handmade with intention, slow craft, and earth-born materials. 🌿✨

Fast fashion jewellery is designed to be temporary—mass-produced by machines, trend-chased, and empty of real soul. It fills high streets for a moment before ending up forgotten or broken.
Jewellery should mean more than that.
When you choose Kaiōko, you’re stepping away from the throwaway cycle and into something deliberate, honest, and rooted in true craftsmanship.
Handmade & Ethical: Every single piece is assembled by hand in the UK, crafted with intention rather than churned out on a factory line.
Keeping Ancient Crafts Alive: We source materials directly from traditional artisan makers across Africa and Asia. Your piece carries the heritage of generations of hand-crafting traditions that machines simply cannot replicate.
Supporting Real Families: Every order directly sustains artisan communities, providing dedicated families with steady work, fair support, and the dignity to keep their traditional crafts thriving.
Stop buying into the soulless, hollow noise of fast fashion. Choose slow jewellery that carries a history, respects the hands that made it, and connects you to a global story.
✨ Wear something real. Support the craft.
