Continuing our exploration of contemporary East Asian electronic music, this release brings together seven female producers whose works span ambient, dub, electro.For too long, the “East” has been constructed as a feminine, mysterious, and sensory object for the colonial gaze. Such aesthetic conventions function not only as gendered constraints, but also as extensions of colonial logic, positioning both women and the East as objects of spectacle. Electronic music unsettled inherited cultural and aesthetic categories. Just married. @chunyoufestival, I do 👰🏻 Where would we be without Chun You?? Simply the best. Absolute scenes this year, wettest-muddiest edition since the infamous rainout of 2019. Amazing music and buzzy tings happening all around. Love hearing the stories and unheard lore, we will share for a lifetime. Stoked to contribute the outro to this mammoth 45-track collection of inspiring leftfield nomadic club sounds 😮‍💨 The brief was an invitation for weird, not 4 on the floor tracks “that feel like an endangered species,” resulting in this multigenre melange of motley goodies: dubby, wonky, edgy, hard. Listen from start to finish, the whole thing flows like 🙌“Huilaii” = “come backk” is a one take from the Machinedrum dating back to pre-pandemic jams in Chengdu/Wellington. Emo melodychords layered out of detuned toms. Crushy melancholy. Rough round the edges. Warm and fuzzy feelings for this one.
