she was never one body - pt ii

introducing the artists : @kaithais

Kai Thaís’s work responds to the vulnerable and oftentimes visceral feminine desire as felt through the body. Her sculptural practice relies on creating encounters with ‘anti-bodies’. Texturing the experience of feminine desire, queer and chronically ill bodies through frictions in found and repurposed materials.

Her material choices of fabric, photographs and found objects speak to the feminine, the domestic, and the fast consumption of image and garments. Her use of found materials aims to resist fast textile production and consumption, simultaneously honoring the life the textile garments have already had. Her sculpture becomes a bodily site of affection, change, and desire using mostly household items like table runners, curtains, clothes; and capturing images of vulnerability through bodies in motion, in change, in interaction.

Looking back on my year at @rca_contemporaryartpractice and my lovely, noisy, muscle-cramping affair with sheet steel and the english wheel. Eternally fortunate to have the friends and collaborators I found here. 🫶🏽

Also a humongous shout out to @rca.metal for being too cool for skool and letting me bother them every single day hahaha 🔥⛏️👩🏽‍🏭 taken in Royal College of Art by @kaithais

In the space where a river springs from me, my body becomes water. And I, part of this river.

Submersion is a deeply erotic and vulnerable issue.

When one starts understanding the world though the body one starts reproducing it in the objects that surround you. Inevitably you might want to expand your body beyond its flesh, and you might start equating your body’s needs and functions to that of bodies of water. I make of the body an imagined landscape. The valleys of my chest can hold a lake, the spring of a river is between my legs. Temperature, texture, wetness, space, movement, rhythm. They trace an intimate relation between my body and water. I've started to see the limits of the body as liquid, and drew parallels between my own body (and its desires) to bodies of water. Seeing wetness as a dissolution of borders, and submersion as an approach to freedom.

The concept of the imagined map in which the installation resides is especially useful in relating the (feminine) body to (colonized) land. It helps put in scene the colonial violence inflicted on the body and the territory. Both bodies, carnal and territorial, are objects of control, commerce, and legislation. Both sites are sterilized and continually contested.
'Imagined Cartography of a Body' is a scene in this map. It invites one to submerge in a state of change, where wetness acts as a connector and changer of bodies. A becoming, a birth, a transformation, a longing.

Preparing for the end of my MA, here is a view of 'Imagined Cartography of a Body' (2026) as shown for the Royal College of Art's RCA2026 show

Introducing Kai Thaís @kaithais

As she fragments, transmutes and references the body, Kai Thaís (B. 2003) works in creating encounters with ‘alternate bodies’. Her work is informed by the experience of feminine, queer and chronically ill body in the context of colonial Caribbean. Where the body and the territory are objects of control, commerce, legislation. Both sites are sterilized, contested and hold memory. The body turns into a stage, a house, or the stretch of land. The transformation of the body as territory becomes an exercise in freedom and an imaginary of decolonization, where borders are uncertain and changeable.
With a sculptural practice based in image, found object, textile, and performance, her object-making is accompanied by research on feminist, posthuman, and decolonial theory. Giving form to the encounters through the tactile experience and material identity of her work. A photograph fragments the form. Textiles play on the feminine, insecurity, and vulnerability tied to the social roots of working with fabric and family history. In comparison, found objects are recipients of environment/subject encounters. They offer a rich array of textures in dialogue with skin, scars. Integrating these mediums explores the fluidity of identity and perception of the self. by @kaithais
