POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Story time! About a week ago, approximately 3 hours after my best girl Jelly was adopted, I got a call from my friend @paws_and_unwind_ @carlynrf. Her neighbor @bassettfromtheblock found a dog running loose down the street (she decided to call that dog Frankie) and she wanted to know if I could keep her overnight so she she didn’t have to go to the shelter (I think her exact words were ā€œwho do I know that’s crazy enough to take in a dog off the streetā€ šŸ˜…).

From what we were able to gather, Frankie was found by someone in an apartment building where she had been left in her crate for 3 days with no food or water, sitting in her own mess. Frankie ended up getting loose and the person who found her decided he was just going to let her go because he didn’t want to take care of her.

Lucky for Frankie, the good samaritan who found her running down the street also happens to be on the foster team at @nycscr. And thus, a plan was formed. After doing our due diligence, Frankie officially became a Second Chance girlie and was vetted by their vet partner.

One night of Frankie turned into two nights turned into ten days while the team looked to secure more permanent placement (and I’m happy to report Frankie is now with a wonderful full time foster who I’m secretly hoping will adopt her 😬).

Disclaimer: bringing random dogs home is generally not advisable, but Frankie was friendly and social and I was confident I could intro the girls slowly and keep them separate if needed. Lucky for me, Frankie turned out to be pretty perfect and is just the silliest, sweetest, goofiest girl. We learned that she loves rolling around on the rug, playing with her ball is her favorite activity, she’s obsessed with water and she has the most perfect underbite.

We will miss having her around, but I know it’s only up from here for little miss Frankie! Frankie is 2 years old, 40 lbs and adoptable via @nycscr (government name Princess Serena). taken in Williamsburg, Brooklyn by @kaitlinndanielle

I have a confession to make. I very nearly didn’t foster Jelly. Even though I fell in love with her on our Borough Break @nycacc and couldn’t stop talking or thinking about her for 2 weeks, I was hung up on one teeny tiny note in her records. During her time at the shelter, she had 3 separate dog-dog intros. In the first two, she displayed loose, bouncy body language, but in the third, it said she ā€œbecomes forward and vocalizes.ā€ That’s it.

Those 4 words almost made me say no to her, and what a mistake that would have been because she was quite literally perfect.

I texted so many volunteers asking for their advice (shoutout @therescuedogs_ and @rachelgwozdz ), and because I had met her and spent time with her, I decided to say yes. Which is all to say - go spend time at the shelter! Meet the dogs in person! Take shelter notes within the context they’re in (stressed and not a home environment)!

Since spending more time at the shelter, I’ve learned that these dogs are forever labeled by what how someone perceives their behavior during an incredibly stressful intake process - undoubtedly one of the most stressful moments of their lives, being poked and prodded by strangers, surrounded by constant noise and barking.

That being said, because of that one small note, we decided to take things really slow the first few days to set her up for success and keep Cabbage safe. We kept the girls completely separate for the first few days. Jelly was understandably incredibly stressed and overstimulated - humping me, vocalizing, having difficulty settling, panting, pacing (I definitely had an oh sh!t I don’t know if this is going to work moment). But by day 3, she was a completely different dog and so much more at ease and settled into our routine (I BEG of fosters and adopters to please be extra patient in the beginning, the first few days are always the hardest!)

Jelly exceeded my every expectation and made everyone she met fall in love with her. I’m over the moon that she found the most perfect forever family (they literally waited hours to meet her) and now is living her best Long Island life.

I can’t wait for our next foster, who I’m sure will be coming soon šŸ‘€ taken in New York, New York by @kaitlinndanielle

🚨 This sweet girl ended up loose on the streets of New York, but luckily one of our foster coordinators saw her running - and jumped into action to save her.

From there, an incredible group of women came together @paws_and_unwind_ @kaitlinndanielle. Calls were made, plans were coordinated, and everyone worked together to make sure she was safe. Her owner ultimately surrendered her into our care, giving her the chance to start a new chapter.

Now, Princess Serena urgently needs a foster or forever home.

She’s dog friendly, people friendly, house trained and crate trained. She’s also spayed and vaccinated.

So many people came together to get her to safety. Now we need one more person to open their home and help carry her the rest of the way. ā¤ļø

One whole week of Jelly girl ā¤ļø I first met Jelly (fka Ms. Caramel Jelly) at the @nycacc a few weeks ago when @parkerfosters and I took her out on a Borough Break with @muddypawsrescuenyc. I was immediately smitten and couldn’t stop gushing about her to @_danilevy. I told her we HAD to have her and checked in almost every day to see if a foster had been found.

I counted down the days until I was available to foster her myself, and 2 weeks after meeting her for the first time, Jelly came home with me and left the shelter behind for good.

While at the ACC, Jelly spent a month and a half living in a small pop up crate in the overflow room for 23.5 hours a day. She was rated a level 3 for fearfulness, but when Parker and I met her, she was anything but (which just goes to show that shelter notes alone - which are taken within a few hours of their arrival, when they’re at their most stressed - aren’t an accurate representation of these dogs).

The first 3 days with Jelly were…a lot. I questioned if I made the right decision, if I was a good enough foster. She was understandably stressed and overstimulated and would lose her mind with excitement if she even caught a glimpse of Cab, which manifested in jumping, barking and vocalizing. We kept them separate and gave her time for her nervous system to reset and what a difference 3 days made. Jelly is now able to settle and calm herself sooo much more easily, is able to peacefully co exist with her foster sister and is settling into home life incredibly well.

Jelly is the absolute goodest girl in the world and I’m so proud of her progress. I just adore her! She’s potty trained, good on a leash, sleeps through the night, easy to redirect, super smart, isn’t reactive, doesn’t resource guard, and is so so sweet. Plus, she has the most adorable little face and ears! She makes us laugh every day and will make someone so happy.

Our time with Mist (aka Misty/Misty Moo/Miss Moo/Moo Moos) has come to an end (she’s back with her fabulous full time foster @fratboiihanz), but she’s still on the market and looking for her forever home!

Misty Moo is pure sunshine and we had so much fun having her at Camp Cabbageā„¢ļø. I have no idea how this silly goofy girl was at the shelter for SEVEN months (she started at Queens @nycacc then was moved to @aspca before being pulled by @muddypawsrescuenyc).

Mist is about as perfect as they come, and has so much personality (have you seen her bunny hops?!). She’s a social butterfly who loves both people and dogs, and wants to be as close to her humans as possible at all times (there’s no such thing as personal space with her). She may be 60 lbs, but she fully thinks she’s a lap dog. She’s crate trained, housetrained, sleeps through the night, isn’t reactive, is close to being a perfect leash walker and I only heard her let out one or two small barks while playing.

She would do well as a solo dog or with a dog sibling who matches her exuberant play style. She makes a great WFH buddy and is content to sleep by your side after getting her morning and mid afternoon walks and play sessions in. She would also do well with someone who goes into the office - she’s not destructive and did SO well in her crate (she mostly just sleeps).

While we had Mist, my parents were also in town (because why wouldn’t you pick up a new foster while your parents are visiting?!) and she was wonderful. She was completely unbothered by all the chaos and commotion of our apartment projects, and is equally unbothered by the hustle and bustle of the city.

Misty Moo is the whole package and is going to make someone so happy. She’s available for adoption via @muddypawsrescuenyc. Wish her luck at her first @petco adoption event today!! ā¤ļø taken in New York, New York by @kaitlinndanielle

Yesterday may have been national dog day, but today is my official 2 year fosterversary, so please indulge me as I post even more dog photos and get a little sappy.

2 years ago, I made an impulsive decision to foster a dog, a decision that could have ended very badly, but instead did not. The dog gods must have smiling down on me that day because they delivered the most perfect dog of all time in the form of Georgie. Georgie changed everything for me. I loved him sooo much that, rather than foster fail the first time around (which I did briefly consider), I decided to keep fostering. That decision has changed my life for the better in more ways than I can count, and is a decision that ultimately led me to Cabbage (my best decision of all).

There were a lot of things I didn’t know when I started fostering (and a lot of things I still don’t know!), but perhaps the most unexpected thing of all was the incredible community I’ve found myself a part of and the friends (both online and IRL) who I’ve met along the way.

Animal rescue is hard (and I’ve really only just dipped my toe in), and the need has never been greater, but I’m excited to continue to do this work with @muddypawsrescuenyc and all the other volunteers who have devoted so much of their lives to saving dogs. Year 3, let’s do this.

(Also special shoutout to my sister and partner in crime who didn’t ask for any of this lol @kendalllelizabeth) taken in New York, New York by @kaitlinndanielle

Cabbage and I had the privilege of spending this past weekend with sweet adoptable Knoll, who is currently being fostered by @jewelsfosterclub. Oh how I love this girl! And, even more importantly, Cabbage also loved her - these two were thick as thieves.

Knoll was found as a stray in Bushwick and spent a few months at the @nycacc before she was placed on the at risk list for her fearfulness in the shelter. Her foster mom Clara pulled her at the 11th hour and now she is patiently waiting for a forever home! As you can see, now that she’s out of the shelter, she has no fear to speak of. This was us within less than 24 hours. All she wants is to be close to you, touching at all times. I think she would live in your skin if she could.

Knoll is about as perfect as they come. She’s approximately 2 years old, super dog friendly, knows several commands, is crate and potty trained, medium energy and the perfect size at around 50 lbs.

As much as I would love for her to stay in the neighborhood, what I would love even more is for her to find a forever home!

You can reach out to @jewelsfosterclub for more info on adopting. 🫶 taken in Williamsburg, Brooklyn by @kaitlinndanielle
