Compression climbing with arêtes or face climbing on crimps?

Two completely different styles. One is powerful and technical, relying on body tension, positioning, and movement. The other is all about crimping up the face, with precise footwork and the occasional toehook. (The video might not look very technical, but trust me 🤫)

I love both styles for different reasons, and I had an amazing time climbing in Gottardo. The rock, the movement, and the atmosphere made every session memorable.

Now it’s time to find the next destination. Any recommendations? 🧗‍♂️

First time in Gottardo.
It was amazing to discover new places and experience a different style of climbing. Managing my skin and reading the weather wasn’t easy for me😅 I’d climbed a bit of a similar style in Japan before, but Gottardo is on another level.

ヨーロッパに拠点を移して、もうすぐ2年。
生活にはだいぶ慣れてきた（言語レベルは0歳児）。

ヨーロッパに来た理由は長くなるので省略。

今回少しだけ書きたいのは、BJCについて。

2年ぶりにセットするBJC。
日本代表権をかけたこの大会に懸ける選手たちの戦いは、年々激しさを増している。

ヨーロッパで働いて気づいたことがいくつかある。
そのうちの一つが “Japanese climbing style”。

外に出たからこそ、日本のクライミングの独自性がよりはっきり見えるようになった。

だからこそ、BJCはそのスタイルの最高峰であってほしい、と個人的には思っている。

もちろん、いろいろな意見があるのはわかっている。
ルートセッターには、コンペをデザインする力がある。
極端な話、完登ゼロの大会だって作れるし、その逆もできる。

「誰が日本で一番強いのか？」

それを決めるのがBJCなら、日本らしいスタイルの課題で順位を分けたい。

もし今年のBJCを見て
「ちょっとワールドカップっぽい」と感じた人がいたなら、
代表選考大会としての役割は果たしているのかもしれない。

でも、それはBJC本来のスタイルとは少し違う、とも感じている。

代表を選ぶためにワールドカップに寄せた課題が必要なら、
それはそれで、もっと思い切って寄せた選考大会を別で設けてもいいのではないか。

協会の内情や事情は正直わからない。
外からだからこそ言えてしまう意見なのも理解している。

でもヨーロッパ諸国の選考方法や大会に関わってきた中で、
日本との違いを強く感じたのも事実。

同じような意見を持つ選手やセッターも、きっといると思う。

自分にできるのは、ルートセットだけ。

日本のクライミングシーンがもっと面白く、もっと強くなるように。

Quick trip to Arco = maximum fun! 🤟 Last time I was here was 9 years ago for the WYC — this time just pure rock climbing, friends, and good vibes. Arco never disappoints. Who’s in for the next trip? 😎🧗‍♂️
