Kona 2026

I’ve given it a full 48 hours, and I still have some very mixed emotions. Extremely frustrated, but proud of how I handled the adversity. Luck was not on my side during my first Kona. Just a few minutes before starting the swim, my goggles broke in half. I managed to get a pair of lost-and-found goggles from the Ironman staff, which were far too small, causing them to leak and need to be adjusted every 10 strokes or so, as I could not see where I was going. Getting out of the water, I shook this off and focused on the bike.

About 30 minutes into the bike, I got a flat tire. I stayed calm, fixed it, and tried to forget about what had happened so far in the race, which was still so young. I still had hope. At mile 56 of the bike, I flatted again. This time, I had no tube to fix it, as I had already used it, which left me waiting on the side of the road for a mechanic for about 35 minutes, bike in hand, watching my teammates, competitors, and fellow athletes go by - demoralizing feeling. The thoughts of “Why me?” or “Out of all races, why today?” started creeping in. I deflected these as best I could and tried to focus on embracing the moment and enjoying the race I had worked so hard to get to. This was tough, and admittedly, I lost the will to really suffer and dig deep - something that is needed to truly compete. But most importantly, I stayed positive, soaked in the experience, and kept going.

Coming down that finishing chute and seeing my parents was a moment I will never forget.

This was not quite how I imagined a breakthrough season to end. But when you race enough of these things, shit happens (crashes, flats, sickness, etc.), and I’ve learned not to let the highs get too high or the lows get too low.

Thank you to my family, teammates, coach, friends, and, of course, my beautiful fiancée, who needed to stay back this trip to focus on far more important things :) (CRNA school!), for the support and helping me get here. I am just getting started and have bigger, scarier goals for next season. But for now, a little rest and off-season.

Ironman Lake Placid - 6th Overall, 2nd in Age Group

Third time at LP and this course continues to humble me, but something about it keeps me coming back! Always a blessing sharing the course with my Dad and many teammates.
