Monks in Japan follow very different rules depending on the sect, and unlike the common image of Buddhist monks elsewhere, many are allowed to marry, eat meat, and even keep their hair. This comes from reforms in the Meiji period, when the government loosened strict monastic codes to modernize Buddhism.

I spent several days with Zeko, a monk under the Nichiren Sect to learn firsthand, @monk_kakurinbo

Part 2 – Waarom Minobu?

Sommige plekken bezoek je niet alleen met je ogen, maar ook met je gevoel.

Mijn reis brengt mij naar Minobu, een verborgen berggebied
waar natuur, boeddhisme en eeuwenoude tradities samenkomen.

Dit is al eeuwenlang een plek waar rust, spiritualiteit en de Japanse cultuur hand in hand gaan.

Als chef met ruim 30 jaar ervaring in de Japanse keuken ben ik hier om één van mijn grootste passies verder te ontdekken: Shojin Ryori
de traditionele boeddhistische keuken.

Ik wil begrijpen hoe eenvoud, respect voor de natuur en aandacht voor elk ingrediënt samenkomen in deze bijzondere manier van koken.

Part 2 – Why Minobu?

Some places are experienced not only with your eyes, but also with your heart.

My journey takes me to Minobu, a hidden mountain region where nature, Buddhism, and centuries-old traditions come together.

For centuries, this has been a place where peace, spirituality, and Japanese culture go hand in hand.

As a chef with more than 30 years of experience in Japanese cuisine, I’ve come here to deepen my understanding of one of my greatest passions: Shojin Ryori, the traditional Buddhist cuisine.

I want to discover how simplicity, respect for nature, and mindfulness toward every ingredient come together in this unique way of cooking.
