Good Morning! The surgery went well and I'm feeling much better. I"ll be ready for a new home shortly. I'm a late 50s early 60s Gibson LG2. Plays well with kids and other guitars. #neckreset #guitars #kalamazoo #luthier #gibsonguitar by @kal_tone
One piece at a time… I heard stories about Gibson workers lowering parts from the third floor to their friends waiting on the train tracks. It looks like these Brazilian rosewood sides were cut then reglued in order to be smuggled out. Anyone else out there have a handmade not Gibson? #gibsonguitars #diy #kalamazoo #guitar by @kal_tone
Mark Morris of @overly_polite_tornadoes_ with his recently acquired Wave #guitar. Having musicians and friends that we admire play your guitars is about as good as it gets! #kalamazoo #luthier #musician by @kal_tone
Kal-Tone has re-opened! We’ve never been great at keeping up in social media, but our craftsmanship and service are top notch. Thanks for following the page and expect regular posts going forward. #kalamazoo #guitar #luthier by @kal_tone
After 8 years of offering our services to the Kalamazoo area, Kal-Tone will be closing its doors and business at the end of this year. Essentially, we're moving (still Kalamazoo), no longer offering repair services, and will be undergoing a rebrand/rebuild with 100% focus on building quality, unique fretted instruments. I'll be starting a new business next year, "Charters Guitar Studio". Kal-Tone will continue on as a series (Eleanor, Wave, Edison) that the new shop will make, along with my more unique designs and custom builds that will get my old "Charters" logo from 2010. As I enter my 25th consecutive year working professionally on instruments, the numbers have added up. Over 20,000 at last count from age 19-43. The fatigue and burnout is real, and I almost quit over the quarantine. The dream has always been to build and create full time. The reality has always been that repairs and restorations pay the bills, while building was put on the back burner. So I'm taking a leap. I need to in order to force myself to shake the cobwebs and fire up my artistic furnace once again. The Studio will consist of myself, Lachlan (going on his 4th year with me) in the setup/electronics department and Gerren managing production in the workshop. We've been making tooling and building up parts in process this past year and will start rolling out available for sale instruments early 2023. We will not be taking any custom orders anytime soon as we concentrate on building inventory of standard models to start. I truly regret no longer being able to offer help to our customers. You often learn more from the customer than the guitar... It's been educational the truly vast amount of different instruments and musicians I've had the benefit of working with. Those experiences are not forgotten, they go with me. Thank you. A big thanks also to everyone who has worked for the shop over the years. It's difficult work and I can be a difficult person to work with, but we made a lot of people happy. If it came out of our shop, it was done right. I’m looking forward to distilling my experience down into these new instruments. It’s finally time. Thanks. -Ry Charters by @kal_tone

Restoration (from quarantine days) on a #russian #8stringguitar from the 1800s that “came over on the boat” with the owners ancestors. It needed everything… headstock and heel repair (bolt on), new fretboard, reglued every brace, new bridge, etc. Most surprising was that the back and sides were flatsawn with hand painted grain lines!!! Repairing the shellac without damaging the “grain” was tricky but came out good. Ready for another 100! #luthier #kalamazoo #guitar #restoration by @kal_tone
I’ve seen a LOT of #gibson instruments over the years working in #kalamazoo for 24 years, but this is the first time working on Style O. Over 100 years old, excellent condition. Excellent owner. #guitar #luthier #vintage #madeinkalamazoo by @kal_tone
