Ever lose yourself in the quiet hum of a city like Mumbai? Or Delhi, Hyderabad or Bengaluru, for that matter? I do. quite often, in fact!
For those who like walking around the city, you would know that sweet spot. That time or spot where the noise fades and you stumble upon something unexpected. That's how I feel when I peek into a watchmaker's workshop.

Once you step inside, time ticks to a different rhythm. In a city like Mumbai, every second is precious and people are rushing past at a whirlwind speed. But right inside these shops, you can only hear the steady, calming pulse of those tiny mechanisms. A watchmaker's workshop is like a sanctuary of time.

If you have made it this far, I would like to tell you that the image you see above is not clicked by me. It belongs to a friend who is not on Instagram. Here is what I remember from the day!

Here, amidst the tick and tock of myriad watches, two master craftsmen sit, both engrossed in the intricate world of watch mechanics. While the glasses are precariously perched on top of the nose of the elder crafstman (Ghadisaaz as we call them in Hindi), his hands are steady as a rock! Each flick of the wrist, each measured placement of a watch tool, spoke of a lifetime dedicated mastering this intricate art. The younger craftsman shares the same meticulous attention to detail.

As you zoom into the heart of the watch, you see tiny gears, glistening like metallic constellations, meshed together. Now, I have not seen a surgeon work, but this is what it must be like. Those fingers move around with the precision of a surgeon. It is like magic. Time itself is being coaxed back to life.

Now, it is easy to tap twice on the image and move on. These images or this post isn't about fixing a broken watch. For me, it is a story of heritage, a story that is whispered across generations. It is a testament to the pursuit of excellence in a city tat is obsessed with speed. It tells me that the most valuable things are not about digital efficiency. It is about taking a moment to pause and cherish or appreciate the timeless skills passed down through generations.

The year was 2019 & it was on a leisurely stroll through Pune when I found myself drawn to a small, unassuming watch shop nestled in one of the city's quieter lanes. Inside, the shop was a watch enthusiast’s paradise. Amidst them, the Nino caught my eye, its vibrant blue dial shining modestly in the subdued lighting. The shopkeeper, an elderly gentleman with a knack for storytelling, told me this watch hadn't found a wrist in years. Its uniqueness, he said, wasn’t for everyone. But for me, it was perfect. It was as though it had been waiting there just for me to come along.

Since that day, I have proudly worn my Nino on my wrist. Every tick is a callback to that serendipitous day, every glance at it a nod to the beauty that lies in the unnoticed and the uncelebrated.

While the big names in watchmaking command awe and respect, it's the elusive charm of brands like Nino that truly ignite my collector’s passion. This vintage Swiss beauty might not headline auctions or grace billboards, but it tells a story as deep and captivating as any luxury giant. The fact that it’s shrouded in obscurity only adds to its allure, making every moment spent with it a personal discovery.

Montblanc gets a lot of flak from purists because they started as a pen company, but pieces like the 1858 Geosphere prove they know exactly what they’re doing.

It completely leans into that old-school, vintage explorer vibe without feeling like a lazy reissue of an old watch. It’s loud, it’s heavy, and those rotating hemispheres are a total flex of visual engineering. It’s easily one of the most unique dials in my rotation right now.

Also, the bronze case is already starting to darken up and get that perfect, slightly beat-up look. Exactly how a tool watch should be :)
