Details from Ancient Ordinary by Alex Panzer @imalexpanzer and Kaleb Wesolek @kalebwesolek

Ancient Ordinary aims to reflect on and reinterpret the objects that frequent our lives. This concept is explored through pieces that represent ordinary objects. The Artifacts, The Ancestor, The Sitter, and The Chair all presented as if stumbled upon by an archeologist of the future mulling over ancient humans. The mundane suddenly becomes the most interesting without the context of the object. One of the most mundane and ubiquitous objects, the chair, was chosen for reinterpretation. Used simply to sit and rest, think, consume. What if our understanding of the mundane was not so obvious and universal? The Chair answers this question through recontextualization

Hello everyone,

Our mom, Shannlyn, was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer this past year. Unfortunately, we’ve not only been navigating her diagnosis, but also struggling to afford the many unexpected medical expenses that come with starting treatment.

If anyone feels compelled, we’ve set up this GoFundMe to help cover the cost of her ongoing treatment. If you’re unable to donate, simply sharing this with other people you know is also more than helpful.

We’re deeply grateful for however your contribution may look. Thank you to everyone for taking the time to read and for the support, prayers, and love.

Kaleb Wesolek pushes his pen beyond convention.

Drawing since childhood and refining his craft through university, Wesolek credits traditional training for giving him a strong foundation—but not without limits. While grateful for the discipline and technical rigor, he believes real growth begins once you learn how to step outside the rules ingrained by formal education. For him, unlearning is just as important as learning.

Now, Wesolek is focused on breaking past creative boundaries and becoming a freer, more intuitive thinker. Yet traces of structure still surface in his work. Repetition, emphasized patterns, and meticulous details appear again and again—an obsessive precision he openly attributes to his OCD, even when it means spending far longer on a piece than planned.

“The more you do it, the easier it gets,” he says. “Drawing is the base for all artistic outlets.”

Lately, he’s been challenging himself to rely less on references and trust his instincts more—allowing the work to evolve organically rather than through rigid planning.

Alongside his personal practice, Wesolek works professionally as a graphic designer in the corporate space. While the experience has sharpened his skills, his long-term goal is to collaborate with a creative agency and focus on branding projects that feel more meaningful and fulfilling.

We sat down with Wesolek to talk about Las Vegas, his creative journey, and where he sees his work heading next. by @kalebwesolek

Service for reception 2pm-4pm

Thank you to Mercado Sin Nombre @mercadosinnombre for helping us bring a little taste of Austin to the desert, and to @desertbiennialproject for hosting us!

Access Info: We will be set up at a table on the lake bed near Kaleb’s sculpture, and access will be similarly rugged to the rest of the biennial. We will be serving coffee, caffeine free tea, sweetener and dairy and non-dairy creamer. In an effort to tread lightly on the desert, there will be no paper cups, please bring your own mug for a free coffee!

Image Description: A dusty hand-drawn poster with sun-bleached text featuring cactus and prickly pear motifs and the information above, giving the feeling of a dry lakebed right before a storm comes to quench us. by @kalebwesolek

Today's artist highlight: Kaleb Wesolek!

Wesolek most closely identifies with analog practices like drawing and painting, though he is also well-versed in the anatomy of design. His work embodies a spirit of push and pull between the worlds of art and design, sometimes merging the two, or giving way to one or the
other. Themes of nihilism burrow their way into his work, though just as frequently, yield to themes of wonder, rooted in the curiosities of life and optimistic living. Wesolek seeks more figurative forms and welcomes the nuances of design to inform his
compositions. While structure, technique, color, and letterforms all serve as descriptors of his current practice, line and shape have naturally become the most consuming. Systematic linework commands his drawings, while methodical shapes characterize his paintings. Continuing to evolve as an artist, Wesolek explores sculpture as well, drawn to the dimensionality it offers. His introspection extends to materials, inviting viewers to reflect on their perceptions of physical being. Wesolek’s renderings emerge from neurotic waves, but shape a path toward contentment in the act of simply living. by @kalebwesolek
