“A New Beginning”, pastel on paper, 24 x 18 inches👇🏾

This piece marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life. In the weeks leading up to accepting my new position as a full-time Assistant Professor of Art at CSULB, a white butterfly began appearing on my daily walks, often circling around me as I walked. I couldn’t shake the feeling that its presence meant something.

“A New Beginning” is about transition, growth, and those quiet moments that somehow feel like confirmation that you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be. 🫶🏾

It felt good to get back in pastel again!!

Black Excellence isn’t about being perfect. It’s about knowing who you are, knowing where you come from, and refusing to shrink yourself to make other people comfortable.

It’s walking into spaces our ancestors were never allowed to enter and knowing we belong there.

It’s education. Creativity. Ownership. Discipline. Culture. Family. Legacy.

It’s doing the work when nobody is clapping for you. It’s opening doors, then holding them open for somebody coming behind you.

I don’t need to prove that I’m excellent.

I just need to keep showing up as it.

Black. Educated. Creative. Powerful. Unapologetic.

That’s Black Excellence. ✊🏾

I’m pleased and honored to be one of 34 artists selected for Tiny Pieces: 12 & Under, presented by Gallery 99 in collaboration with Pretty Smart Studio in Long Beach! My piece Kiré will be exhibited as part of the show.

The exhibition features small works measuring 12 inches or less, with all artwork priced under $500. It’s a great opportunity to discover new artists and add something original to your collection.
