Grateful to celebrate the matriarch’s big 90th birthday 🫶 #latepost bc I am who I am

🌊 The first week of August is the biggest blessing of my life. It represents years of annual, week-long family reunions at the beach house in CT and our family of matriarchs, that have helped us stay connected through generations. This year, I worked in step with my fam to move the tradition up a month in celebration of my grandma’s monumental birthday. Shout out @stefania.joy for being my planning partner & all other planning committee (I made that up) members 💞

🤝 My grandma taught me about the importance of service from a young age and this birthday was my attempt to return all the good she has given to the world. She always sends birthday cards for family and friends, shows up for every day and special celebrations, and has clearly chosen love when heartbreak or spite would have been an easier choice.

💓 I am so grateful for every moment we have laughed until we cried (literally), shared a good meal, and gently hugged goodbye, knowing it wouldn’t be for long.

💌 I recently received a letter from my 18-year old self, thanks to the incredible K Brown @kathryn.d.brown In this letter I emphasize that the most important thing to me is family. My greatest aspiration has always and will always be strengthening and nurturing the bonds in my family, just like my grandma.

🤞 When I have asked her how she has fostered such love and compassion she said through phone calls and visits, that’s all. It is the simplest of things, the moments in a chair by the ocean waves, the 12 meals a day during family reunions, the “vitamins” (cheese balls) as a midnight snack, and the love we share that makes our bonds so strong. I take comfort in knowing that just showing up as I am is enough to be loved and cared for by my family.

28 blissful rotations around the sun 🌞 #birthday

🌎 Seven years ago, I wrapped up my first solo trip, visiting 11 European countries. At the time, I had visited almost as many countries as I had U.S. states, so I made a vow to explore more of the natural phenomena here at home before heading to the Caribbean for a change of pace from the cities I’d seen abroad. Of course, I didn’t expect a global pandemic to completely upend that plan.

🧘‍♀️Fast forward to this year during yoga training, I learned about the sacred energy of the number seven and its multiples. In a moment of enlightenment, I realized the connection to my 28th birthday and the seven years that had passed and decided to finally follow through on my intention. A little delayed, but still right on time, I’ve now been to 21 states and nearly 8% of the world, with the Dominican Republic marking my 15th country.

🌊 I can hardly put into words how amazing it is to be a small town girl who has had the opportunity to connect with so many cultures over time. While solo travel might seem daunting to some, it’s given me the space to trust my instincts, authentically experience local culture at my own pace, and find happiness wherever I go.

Grateful for these opportunities and all the people I get to tell stories to when I come back home, muchos besos 🫶

Unlocked the side quests phase of life 🧘‍♀️

🙏 Grateful to complete my 200-hour yoga teacher training surrounded by new and long-time friends

Only thing I won’t miss from the seven weeks of training is the 5:30AM wake ups ⏰

🌞 watching the first rays kiss the coast of Maine > any midnight kiss

One of the highlights of my year was witnessing the first sunrise in the contiguous U.S. with @clhkim. Grateful for every random adventure I was able to take this year, hopeful for more sun ahead.
