You are the best cat parent to Bailey, you take care of everyone around you and I am eternally grateful for you and that you exist. Here’s to maybe surviving the dumpster fire that is our world and continuing to see you spoil Bailey as an outlet. Maybe add a winning record in Battlefield to the list for this next year, or at least learning how to fly the helicopter in the game. 🤭😝

Celebrating and honoring Grandpa today on Year 6 of his passing looked like synchronicities and finding him in small ways.
The first time he said hello was when my class had a visit from the TSCPL Classroom Connections program. They learned about bugs and became entomology students. Among the bugs they looked at, on a table not being used, was a framed Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. In case you don’t know, that is the Georgia state butterfly, where my Grandpa was born and raised. I felt actual goosebumps when I saw it on the table.
The second celebration was getting Olive Garden. Grandpa and I went on an Olive Garden date in 2019; it was the last time he and I had done something together and I had a gift card I hadn’t used yet that was meant to be used “in honor of Grandpa.” I finally used it tonight with Shea (thank you, bonus mom @jacquiehabermann 🩷)
When I got home and ~finally~ looked at the table, @sheashea_k had gotten us beautiful flowers for the house and candy for us to enjoy today. Then, to see a Payday on the pile? Grandpa actually liked those, but didn’t eat them often due to them sticking on his dentures. 😆 He said hello again. 🪽

I’m grateful this year. The grieving process is always changing; I feel differently at various times and it never has a rhyme or reason. This week, one of my students lost his grandpa after spending so much time with him at the hospice house, and it is so similar to my story with Grandpa (just with the hospital). I ached for my kid’s sweet heart and simultaneously felt so grateful I came out on the other side of my grief to share that experience with him. I’m also incredibly grateful for a partner who understands me and loves me fully, every day. 🤍
I miss my Grandpa every day. There isn’t a day I don’t think of him. I’d like to believe he’s around regularly, and today reaffirmed that. I’ll be seeing you. 💙

Back in June, Shea and I came back to Postcard Cabins and had a weekend/birthday getaway. It definitely felt different than when we went last November (we quickly remembered what poison ivy AND poison oak look like), but it was still a good time nonetheless. 🥰
I still can’t believe how close the cabins are to a stopping place I used to go to every summer with my grandparents years ago on the way to Branson! It feels like I’ve come full circle, visiting the area with my loved one just like I did when I was little.

I always wondered how it was possible veteran teachers forgot how long they’ve been teaching…until I forgot for the first time this summer. 🤣
I guess that means I can officially start applying for senior discounts. 🤭😉

Waverly picked me. I know pet owners say that, but it’s true. I was walking through Petsmart November 2015 and I wanted to go love on the adoptable cats. I walk down the main aisle when I look down towards the adoption section and see the most precious black kitten sitting up as straight as can be, staring me down. I stopped in my tracks and knew that kitten was meant to be mine and I was meant to be hers. I asked to see her, and as soon as she was in my arms, she began purring and I knew we were each other’s.

Waverly turned 10 on Friday. She was also diagnosed with stomach and renal cancer Friday. We brought her home, we loved on her, and relished the time we had remaining. Yesterday and this morning were dreams given the circumstances—I could not have asked for a better time with her. She seemed happy and pain-free.
This morning she transitioned and joined Ambrose just a little over a year later across the rainbow bridge. I received a small sign an hour later that Grandpa was taking care of them both. 🫶🏼 🌈

Waves was truly one of the most special cats I have ever met, and I’m not just saying that because I’m biased. She always had a deep knowing of people. Always vocal and talked to me or sang with me. Funny when she wanted to be, sassy occasionally but never bothered to act on her sass, and had one of the loudest purrs ever. She loved chewing pineapple tops, going outside, watching the birds, chin scritches, head kisses, and getting chased by @sheashea_k on occasion. Speaking of, Waves loved Shea, and that is a feat. Those who met Waves knew she would always tolerate you, but she didn’t need you around unless you were me…until Shea came along. I realized in winter that my soul kitty recognized my person. 🩷
Waverly is my soul cat, one of my soulmates in cat form. It sounds silly and some might laugh, but I know it to be true. We just “got” one another. I was fortunate to be given ten years with her; I just wish I could have had ten more. There will never be another Waverly. I love you so much, and I’m grateful for our last days together. 12 months that have never gone quicker…maybe one day I’ll tell our story, how Fate herself made sure we found one another (finally, yet also again).
