I came across this picture from 2015 of my very first sound bag. Sound Devices 633, Schoeps CMIT 5u, Sennheiser G3s, and a PortaBrace bag. This is quite different from what I use today, so I thought I’d do a little bag evolution. I started getting into sound back in 2014 when I moved to LA. I saved up money for months (doing cheap low budget jobs) to get the 633 and CMIT 5u. In 2016, I switched to an Orca bag. Later that year, I got my first real wireless system and went with Lectrosonics (SRc and SMQVs). In 2017, I added the Audioroot BDS. Prior to that I had the 633 and SRc individually plugged into their own NP1 battery, so this was a game changer. In 2018, I got the Sound Devices MixPre 6 for a tiny backup recorder. I liked the K-Tek bag for it, so I got a K-Tek for my 633 as well. In 2020, I had a short lived Scorpio era, but in 2021 I got the 888, which has been the perfect recorder for me (sold the Scorpio). In 2022, I added the Shure Axient wireless system. Since 2023, my bags haven’t had major changes, just more additions such as the Lectrosonics DSR4. It takes years to build up the perfect bag, and the truth is, I’ll never be done buying gear 😀 🎧 #sound #audio #gear #microphone #evolution by @kallywilliams
This little sleek pouch, made by Jim Saldutti, is super handy for jumping from bag to bag. Whether that be one of my own bags or rental gear, I know I have the basic essentials to get through any work day. Things in the bag: -superstick tape -foldable scissors -Lectrosonics tweaker -small allen key -MicDrop (lav bullet) -ursa pouch -safety pins -sharpie -metcalf noodles/bongo ties -AA and 9V batteries Plus, the pouch has a front pocket that holds a picture of Baxter. Everyday is better with Baxter 🐕 Anyways this has been super convenient, so I thought I’d share 😀 #sound #audio #tools by @kallywilliams
Did some upgrades to my vintage Loon boompole. -Over the past year I noticed the rubber on the bottom had slowly broken off. I asked @kuffcakes3d if he could make something to replace it, and he did! -My internal coiled XLR stopped working, so I soldered a new connector and added a little blue 😎 -I took out all sections and cleaned them with the Ktek boomshine. The Loon is all pretty again! Here’s the backstory: I knew I wanted a Loon when I first used one in 2015. In 2019, I used this particular one for sound mixer @montybuckles . I told him if he ever sold it, I wanted to buy it, and that’s what happened. It’s been my favorite boompole ever since. Take care of your gear so it can last foreverrrrrr! 🎙️ #audio #vintage #boompole #gear #sound by @kallywilliams
Worked on Season 19 of the Great Food Truck Race this past spring. It was fun getting to go to Nashville, Knoxville, Gatlinberg, and Dollywood! Thank you @garmart_ for having me on your audio team! I got to see lots of friends, meet new ones, and my dad visited in Knoxville. Cheers to season 19 😎 ✌️🎧 #tennessee #smokymountains #sound #audio by @kallywilliams
Packed the smallest sound rig possible for a trip to my home state to help on my dad’s @chadforsenate campaign. The gear: -Sound Devices mixpre 6 -DPA 4017b shotgun mic -Lectrosonics SRc with 2 transmitters -smart battery with Audio workbench swift cup (eliminates needing a BDS system) The whole rig fits in an average backpack, which makes it very convenient for travel. I didn’t bring a boom pole, but found a plastic pole that fits in the radius pistol grip perfectly (does this qualify for #shittyrigs? Probably, but it worked!) Overall this is a gear appreciation post to small but mighty equipment for what’s suppose to be a non work vacation 😝 Also, how cute is Baxter? 🐕 #sound #audio #voteforchad #sounddevices by @kallywilliams

The Lectrosonics DSSM 💧 I tried this little cute waterproof transmitter out almost 2 years ago, and I’m finally posting it. It’s quite impressive, the smallest waterproof transmitter out there, and all digital. Worked great in clean water and dirty water such as the lake. For testing, I just used the transmitter body itself rather than in the field where I would wrap it in a vinyl glove for extra protection. I was able to still get signal/sound from the DSSM about 2-3 feet underwater, as radio frequencies struggle to transmit through water. In slide 3, I have the DSSM beside the SSM (the digital hybrid non waterproof original version), to show size comparison. The DSSM is slightly wider, but has curvier edges, and each use a 3 pin lemo for mic connection. They both take the same battery (LB-50 rechargeable), which I was able to get around 4 hrs on 50 mW power on DSSM. The SSM was once upon a time my favorite transmitter, so I was excited to try the new digital waterproof version. The DSSM can be a useful tool especially in specific specialized shoots/scenes. #sound #audio #waterproof #lectrosonics #digitalaudio by @kallywilliams
I’ve had this CRDbag and strap for years now, but recently discovered it’s a great solution for Comms/walkie holder plus keeping surveillance neat. For ENG bag jobs, it’s simple, surveillance on harness and walkie on bag. On other jobs, I feel like this setup looks clean and eliminates running surveillance through shirt and comms/walkie on belt. Just pull out earpiece and be free of the system 😆 it’s also useful to store the essentials like tape/scissors etc. The thinner strap is good for clipping multiple mics to, and have hands free for micing. Anyways, I’ve enjoyed this little setup and thought I would share it. 🎧 #sound #audio #communications by @kallywilliams
How cute is the Betso RF octopus? It’s perfect for small setups with 4 receivers or less. I got to put it to use last week on a shoot using 2 ADX5Ds and 1 DSR4. I have it going to 2 passive PSC antennas, but of course would to get active antennas as an option. The octopus 🐙 is much more convenient on a bag rig than my previous RF multi. #antenna #audio #sound by @kallywilliams
Organizing my audio output options. It’s fun to talk about what goes into recording audio, but outputting the audio is important too! I’ve found the Shure SLXD series to be perfect for camera hops. They sound super clean but look clean on cameras as well 😎 I’ve been using either the SLXD3 or SLXD1 to transmit to the SLXD5s (H55 band). I typically use the Lectrosonics R1a/ifblue for shoots (majority in the unscripted world). They’ve been reliable and easy enough to program. I’m in the process of moving into block 22/B1 (over block 19/A1), so that I can keep my ifb freqs separate from desired talent wireless (usually in A1 for me). I’ve expanded my comtek inventory, as it’s common to have a lot requested for bigger shoots. I recently got the BST 75-216 because I never had much luck with the M-216 transmitter. All of mine are marked with super cute Baxter stickers (thanks @kaitywilliams 🐕). In the sound world, we have sooo many pieces to keep track of (transmitters/receivers/cables) so it’s good to take inventory every now and then. #sound #audio #soundgear #shure #lectrosonics by @kallywilliams
