DUPATTA DIARIES

In response to the trend of “Scandinavian scarfs” sweeping fast fashion, this piece interrogates the erasure of the dupatta, a centuries-old garment rooted in South Asian cultural, spiritual, and aesthetic traditions.

It confronts the long, violent history of cultural appropriation, where the cultural knowledge of South Asian communities is repeatedly stolen, repackaged, and commodified for Western consumption. Meanwhile, these very communities are erased, denied credit, and face economic exclusion.

This shoot is a visual protest against the aestheticization of struggle and the erasure of meaning. By re-centering the dupatta, it calls us to remember, resist, and reclaim what was never lost, only silenced. To my South Asian girlies, wear your dupatta with pride; this is our legacy, and it’s time to reclaim it.

DATE CHANGE: keeping the FIFA finals in mind (we honestly shouldn’t have kept Kalyani’s workshop on that date to begin with and we apologize for that) - we’ve changed Kalyani’s workshop date to July 25th from 1-230 pm!

We STILL can’t WAIT to BollyBurlesque with you 💋

$25 per session or $60 for all three! - and all your money goes to Women’s Education Project

Venmo @crankitupanaach to join and reach out with any questions!

❤️ Why an intensive?

We really want our dancers — especially our beginners (yes, we’re looking at you!) — to have the time to actually learn a choreography, get comfortable in their bodies, and then go beyond just the steps. The goal is to reach a place where you can fully express yourself… and feel sexy, sassy, and confident enough to perform!

As always - all our profits go towards a gender equity non-profit in NYC, this time Women’s Education Project - we love giving you the chance to dance all while giving back to your community and finding ways to get involved!

Let’s @crankitupanaach
