๐ŸšจNEW MUSEUM ACQUISITION๐Ÿšจ

It is with immense pleasure that I can finally announce that my piece ๐‘ถ๐’‚๐’•๐’‰ ๐’๐’‡ ๐‘ฏ๐’๐’๐’๐’“ (2024) has recently been acquired by @risdmuseum . This is surreal yโ€™all. Like part of me canโ€™t believe Iโ€™m typing these words, and another part of me isnโ€™t surprised in the least. When I was a grad student studying for my masters I vividly remember seeing Nari Wardโ€™s โ€œWe The Peopleโ€ exhibition at New Museum and that night declaring to myself that Iโ€™d give myself a goal of at least seven years to get my work within the collection of an institution (honestly, at the time I wanted it to be New Museumโ€ฆ before I learned that they were a non-collecting institution ๐Ÿ˜“). Truth be told I was kinda just yappinโ€™ back then, and Iโ€™m kind of an idiot because who sets a goal like that for themselves before theyโ€™ve even turned in their thesis? Wellโ€ฆ One of the main characters from my favorite anime has a quote that reads โ€œIt takes an idiot to do cool things. Thatโ€™s why itโ€™s coolโ€. This is undoubtedly the coolest thing thatโ€™s happened in my career so far, and it happened a year shy of my self-imposed deadline.

That said, I would be remiss to not acknowledge the many many helping hands along the way that made something like this possible. Thank you @larisa.grace for listening to me crash out bi-monthly about the art world and how my career is in shambles. Thank you @enah.jae for picking me up in the DEAD of winter at like 11:48pm the night I touched down to start working on this new body of work, and for confirming my suspicions about how sick it would be to make this piece after I showed you those Kay Rosen works. Thank you @imani.g.b for tolerating my absolutely manic schedule and letting me sit in silence for an upwards of fifteen minutes when I ran out of acrylic the first day of production. Thank you to @spacescle for welcoming me with open arms, and @zygotepress for all the production help. Thank you @_gabwalk for championing my work and @microscope_gallery for all of their help facilitating.

Iโ€™ve re-written this 4 times already and each time Instagram tells me my caption is too long so Iโ€™ll stop yapping now. by @kamaricarterstudio

Babyโ€™s first biennial (๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿพ) opening this Saturday at @mocaarlington! ๐‘ป๐’ ๐‘ฌ๐’‚๐’• ๐‘ถ๐’–๐’• ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’†๐’Š๐’“ ๐‘บ๐’–๐’ƒ๐’”๐’•๐’‚๐’๐’„๐’† Curated by the fabulous Jesse Firestone brings together 4 artists who look critically at the U.S. infrastructure and the many topics that encompass the perceived expectation of life in this country. Through sound, moving image, photography, and sculpture; each artist takes themes of sousveillence, democracy, and privacy and subverts them into concept or object-hood (sometimes both); examining practice and praxis alongside one another. Grateful to be showing work alongside such an amazing array of artists and looking forward to keeping listening ear on the world around us. by @kamaricarterstudio

It is with great pleasure that I can finally announce my contribution to ๐“ฃ๐“ฑ๐“ฎ ๐“—๐“ธ๐“ป๐“ป๐“ธ๐“ป ๐“ข๐“ฑ๐“ธ๐”€ at the @academymuseum in Los Angeles. For those who know me well knowโ€ฆ. I LOVE HORROR FILMS! When I was 13 I remember staying up way later than I should watching a โ€œTop 100 Horror Filmsโ€ special on TV of talking heads from the industry (actors, writers, directors) dissecting their list of the best films of the genre. Of the list a film Iโ€™d never heard of came in at number 3: Takeshi Miikeโ€™s ๐˜ˆ๐˜ถ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ (1999). I begged my mom to find a DVD copy (this was way before YouTube and all the online access we have today) and we went to every BestBuy in the city until finally finding and buying one of the last copies available. Truthfully I was way too young to be watching such a demented film, but that viewing experience changed me. What a privledge to champion one of my favorite genres, in one of my favorite cities (and home no less). A huge thank you to the curators Jessica and Nicholas for entrusting me with this project, and thank you to @daqiancao for even mentioning my name in the preproduction meetings before we set off on such an ambitious project. The show is up for just shy of a month, so please do check it outโ€ฆ.. if you dare. ๐Ÿ‘ป by @kamaricarterstudio

Art Oh My!

I miss it already. I miss the 4am nights, I miss the insect ecosystem, the spontaneous dance parties, the temperamental weather, the laughs, the tears, the check-ins, the bears; but mostly importantly the talent. What a beautifully, wonderful grounded group of artists. An admin team thatโ€™s as funny as they are timely, and as comforting as they are challenging; and a real gaggle of folk that I will remember for the rest of my days. Thank you @art_omi for this, all of this. Iโ€™m better for it. by @kamaricarterstudio

โ€œPew Research Center found thatย 69% of Americans were dissatisfiedย with the countryโ€™s direction early this year. That is not ingratitude. Sometimes a sour mood is simply clear vision.

In the final days before 4 July, theย US supreme courtย gave the country a diagnosis of itself. It preserved one of the countryโ€™s greatest repairs โ€“ birthright citizenship under the 14th amendment โ€“ while loosening a guardrail against corruption and weakening another promise of equal protection.
Nearly 250 years later, the US is not a finished monument, but a structure still under repair, still contested โ€“ and in places being quietly stripped for parts.โ€ - Jamil Smith for The Gaurdian

โ€œPerfidy (noun) refers to the deliberate betrayal of trust or an act of faithlessness. It goes beyond a simple lie or disloyalty, representing a calculated, treacherous breach of faith where confidence is actively exploited for deceit.

Etymology and Meaning
The word derives from the Latin perfidia, which combines per- (meaning โ€œthroughโ€ or โ€œbeyondโ€) and fidem (meaning โ€œfaithโ€). Literally, it means going beyond the limits of faith. To commit an act of perfidy, there must have been a pre-existing bond of trust that is then intentionally broken.โ€

Iโ€™m a few days late but Happy 4th or whatever.

Codes was a collaborative audio-visual performance developed in residency by Kamari Carter and Gladstone Deluxe using data extracted from live police scanner transmissions. Deriving from Carterโ€™s research-oriented practice on policing, incarceration, Black aesthetics, and surveillance, and Deluxeโ€™s haptic, Afrological and techno-inspired analog compositions, Codes was a synthesis that sought to elevate the obfuscated.

WHO IS SEEN interviews Kamari Carter at White Columns, New York
in collaboration with Precog

A performance rooted in sound, structure, and presence, where microphones become bodies and meaning unfolds over time.

In a moment where visibility itself feels unstable, the work holds space for listening, for tension, and for what remains.

Got the chance to sit down with @amadour_ for @whoisseen and chat about @precogmag and their new issue at @white_columns ahead of my performance last week. I also recommended my favorite ice cream spot and yapped a little bit about Super Smash Brothers. Interview is in my bio if any of that sounds interesting ๐Ÿ™‚โ€โ†•๏ธ by @kamaricarterstudio
