Scale Journal: Volume II, Heresy

Earlier this year I was asked to lead design for the second issue of Scale Journal, and we launched that edition this week!

A note on the theme for this year: “Dominant institutions continue to accrue power, distorting the truth of those most marginalized. In the essay Poetry is Not a Luxury, Audre Lorde suggests that poetry is heresy. Lorde writes that “we must constantly encourage ourselves and each other to attempt the heretical actions our dreams imply and some of our old ideas disparage.” Using architecture to describe the power that words can have, Lorde describes poetry as a “fortress”, “sanctuary”, and “skeleton architecture.” Poetry can be an emancipatory experience as concrete as poured foundation. Architecture, as appropriated by Lorde, builds upon and reinforces heretical dreams.

Variable font sample.

‘What would a typeface look like if secrecy were coded directly into it, rather than applied manually through ciphers?’

My response to this question is a variable typeface (BreakPoint) with multiple axes that shift in legibility, complexity, and distortion - relating directly to ways in which secrecy manifests itself in digital systems.

A series of 10 plates for Grad Studio 1. These plates are a response to researching the book, Cryptomenysis Patefacta: The art of secret information disclosed without a key (1685). This book teaches users how to decipher secret writing and communication on their own without a key - covering topics of ciphers, signs, and gestures.

These plates ask the viewer to participate in decoding information. Each plate is encrypted and requires users to solve the code in order to read the message. Along with coded text, there is also a section on each plate with separate message that when solved prompts the order in which the plates should appear when flipped over to reveal a larger message (shown in the first image).

This product includes: 10 plates, 12 envelopes, 10 strips pinned to each plate with an additional message, a key to help viewers solve the message, and handwritten solved versions of each plate on translucent vellum.

The book, Cryptomenysis Patefacta, was selected from the Providence Public Library special collections.

Exploring the word ‘ephemeral’, this publication is bound on either side and thus requires viewers to participate in an act of ephemerality in order to read further. The result is a book that is ever changing and cannot ever exist in its original form once deconstructed.

Introducing a (WIP) variable typeface that I’ve been creating this semester. Drawing inspiration from quilts and patterns, this typeface has a single “thread” running through the middle of each letter - physically weaving them together when placed in a sequence.

My contribution to Atlas: a collaborative publication that was created at the beginning of the semester with my cohort. This publication is a response to our surroundings, as we begin to navigate our new journey together and explore questions like “Who am I? & Where am I?”

My section is an internal exploration of past, present, and future through a four step process - observation, collection, curation, and documentation.
