For the third time during the Summer Festival, all six venues of Kunstmeile Hamburg become a stage: With DOOMERS, choreographer and director Raja Feather Kelly continues his interdisciplinary body of work together with the feath3r theory (TF3T), a Brooklyn-based dance-theater-media company. In DOOMERS, Kelly turns toward the compulsive loop of digital consumption and its impact on attention, intimacy, and embodiment. The work investigates doomscrolling as both behavior and condition—how the body is shaped by continuous exposure to crisis, how desire for connection becomes entangled with overwhelm, and how perception fractures under constant information flow. Reflecting on my month in Georgia earlier this year. The ongoing global decay of “rights and protections” brought me to Tbilisi, to engage with expressions of resistance by people and communities who’ve long faced constant governmental suppression, stumbling through the lines of fascism disguised as democracy, and to witness and participate in the art that emerges from these nuanced complexities. For nearly 300 days, and defiantly more, Georgians have come together to protest, no longer able to tolerate the system. And LGBTQ+ Georgians, while protesting against these layered forms of oppression, are also fighting for their right to simply exist in their own country. With the support of a friend, I connected with LGBTQ+ artists and organizers, and allies, and observed their communal resilience and individual resistance. @niagvatua mother of Tbilisi’s drag scene and to many, protector, creator (and so much more)@lucr3z1a_ performance artist, photographer, illustrator, and trans woman who’s had to recently flee Georgia (gofundme in links)@utabekaia another mother to many, multimedia artist reimagining and queering ancestral rituals@yamadatesla multidisciplinary artist working with digital and physical mediums@apakidzedavid visual artist queering icons and symbols of Orthodox Christianity@khorbaladzedavit theater director, playwright and composer @god__era an artist redefining fashion @giorgimiminoshvilli multidisciplinary artist interrogating everyday life @giorgi_kikonishvili_ activist, club organizer creating moments for people to remove their societal masks…and several more.To be out is to be a target, leading many to flee. By solely existing they are actively resisting these invisible lines that dictate who and what is accepted and welcomed, and who and what is not. Why is “being” not embraced, not enough? Out of this question comes an urgency to claim a multidimensional identity, “Georgian and…,” to create art and spaces to express self, form connections and piece together a chosen family, to not be alone in this world. A universal urgency that many know, especially those who’ve been deprived of elusive rights and protections. To exist is enough. by @kameronlocke

Last August, I premiered my first play “the Blacker the Berry / perhaps home is not a place but simply an irrevocable condition” for the @kampnagel_hamburg Sommerfestival. It’s about the American writer James Baldwin, his German editor Fritz J. Raddatz, and their shared and individual experiences with identity, home, being queer/gay, parental abuse, and love. I began to write in April ‘24, and while I intended to include my experiences, I blended our truths and merged our voices so James Baldwin could “speak” for me. A conversation with a writer made me realize I was unconsciously attempting to distance myself from the pain I thought I had healed from. To make myself invisible in my story. So, I accepted that if I was to share Baldwin’s and Raddatz’s complex and heavy stories, I owed it to these men and myself to share mine. Writing and performing this was my catharsis. I’m still taking in the experiences on every level…intense research, reading, and writing, creating the set, my first theater stage performance, and everything in between, to jointly embodying James Baldwin and owning my story. This production could not have been possible without the support of the beautiful souls in my corner (and twin/friends who came from all over the world to attend!), and my small but extremely mighty team!Benita Rinne, a heaven-sent expert who made this work, and myself stage-ready.@missesjaycee my superb production manager@juleselting who deeply embodied Fritz, a queer German man who suffered and yearned@oliver_goldberg_ the best light tech in Hamburg@the__schmidt_ as Shadow portraying the complicated emotions and memories many of us, to varying degrees, carry@_akrobat who created a musical soundscape that amplified the story@aventures_de_paulette for Shadow's deep costumeI’m grateful to you all for making an unknown situation possible, and to my co-stars for the deep talent and care you lent not only to your roles but to bringing my words to life.Special thanks to the Sommerfestival team, @fleetstreet_theater_hamburg for the space to create, my funders, James Baldwin’s and Fritz J. Raddatz’s estate, and Beacon Press.Thank you Jimmy for daring to be you. by @kameronlocke
