Last week I spoke at Columbia Business School @columbia_biz.And I had to sit with that for a minute. Growing up in Flint, Michigan, Ivy League schools weren’t part of the conversation in our household.Not because the dream wasn’t there.Because nobody around me was dreaming that big yet.I was a theater kid turned content creator who thought creativity and career were two separate paths.Then a year into college I saw the connection between law and everything I loved.So I went to law school.Then I got in.Then I passed the bar on the first try, becoming part of the 5% of Black lawyers in the US.Then creators were trusting me with their businesses.And now I’m a tech founder living in New York City building at the intersection of the two worlds I love most.Law and the creator economy.Last week I hosted a workshop on going from ideation to launch for @her.risingg first Women in Business Workshop and Panel in collaboration with Girls Who Lead NYC at Columbia Business School.The little girl from Flint didn’t see this coming.But she kept going anyway.The grit and resilience it takes to build wasn’t learned overnight.It’s been decades in the making.Keep going 👏🏾——📸 photographer: @itsmariamaaa by @kameronmonet

Filming content on a NYC sidewalk and negotiating your rate have more in common than you’d think. Both make you want to crawl out of your skin a little. Both get easier. Do it anyway.Here are 3 tips to negotiating with brands:1. Remind yourself that you are a business. Like Jay Z said, “I’m not a businessman, I’m a business, man.”2. Start higher to give yourself room to actually negotiate. If your rate floor is $3,000, start at $5,000 (within reason, and make sure you can back it up). If you land in the middle, great. If you land at $5,000, next time you know to go even higher 😏3. Negotiate everything before you sign. It’s so much easier when everyone’s still happy and nothing’s official yet. Nothing worse than a “he said, she said” battle after signature.
